At the 13th General Assembly of 29th May 2018 it was decided to establish the World Day of Marine Aids to Navigation (World Marine AtoN Day) the 1st July each year, bearing in mind that this is the date of the creation of IALA, with the first celebration in 2019. The principal objective is to promote greater awareness of IALA and its work by bringing to the attention of the wider public the role of Marine Aids to Navigation and the significance of IALA’s technical work in enhancing the safety of navigation worldwide. The General Assembly approved the establishment of a World Marine Aids to Navigation Day and adopted the associated Resolution A13-04.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MARINE AIDS TO NAVIGATION AND LIGHTHOUSE AUTHORITIES (IALA)
IALA is a non-profit, international technical association. Established in 1957, it gathers together Marine Aids to Navigation authorities, manufacturers, consultants, and, scientific and training institutes from all parts of the world and offers them the opportunity to exchange and compare their experiences and achievements.
IALA encourages its members to work together in a common effort to harmonise Marine Aids to Navigation worldwide and to ensure that the movements of vessels are safe, expeditious and cost-effective while protecting the environment.
Taking into account the needs of mariners, developments in technology and the requirements and constraints of aids to navigation authorities, a number of technical committees have been established bringing together experts from around the world.
The work of the committees is aimed at developing common best practices through the publication of IALA Standards, Recommendations, Guidelines and Model courses.
This work ensures that mariners have Marine Aids to Navigation which will meet their needs both now and in the future. Thus IALA contributes to a reduction of marine accidents, increased safety of life and property at sea, as well as the protection of the marine environment.
IALA also encourages cooperation between nations to assist developing nations in establishing aids to navigation networks in accordance with the degree of risk for the waterway concerned.
On Tuesday 16 March 2021 Malaysia signed the Convention on the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation. Malaysia was represented by Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong, Minister of Transport as signatory to the Convention. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the Ambassador of France to Malaysia, His Excellency Roland Galharague, members of the Light Dues Board as well as MOT top management. Also present were His Excellency Serge Segura, Ambassador for Special Representative for Maritime Negotiations, Mr. Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, Deputy Director of United Nations, International Organizations, Human Rights and Francophony, France as well as Mr. Francis Zachariae, Secretary General of IALA and also the Malaysian Embassy in France, which participated virtually
The Marine Department is a government Department under the purview of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia. The objective is to manage administrative related to shipping and ports including maritime affairs within Malaysian waters. Before the establish of the marine Department of Peninsular Malaysia, there were three separate marine departments include Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, each headed by tree different Head of Services.
On 1st January 2011, The three Marine Department was integrated to form the Marine Department Of Malaysia. The first Director General of Marine Department is YBhg. Dato Captain Hj. Ahmad Bin Othman.
The Marine Department is a Government department located under the Ministry of Transport Malaysia. This department was established to administer shipping and port affairs as well as maritime affairs in Malaysian waters
Manage the implementation of activities related to Maritime Traffic Services, Marine Aids to Navigation and Control of Oil Spill and Hazardous Materials from Ships based on the national laws, rules and standard and towards maritime growth.
Function
Plan, implement, regulate, monitor and governs the Mandatory Ship Reporting system (STRAITREP), Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), Automatic Identification and Tracking System, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and Notices To Mariners.
Plan, manage and oversee standards, construction, operation, repair, maintenance and monitoring of marine aids to navigation.
Plan, manage, coordinate, supervise and implement operational control for oil spill and Hazardous Noxious Substances (HNS) from the ship.
