Hip Spica
Techniques of Hip Spica
Primary Use:
Used to support the hip muscles during a hip adductor strain injury or hip flexor strain injury.
Hip Spica Procedures
Procedure 1: Hip Adductor Strain
Materials needed: one roll of double length 6" elastic bandage, anchor clips, sticky elastic tape
Position of patient: patient stands (on floor or table) with weight on uninjured side. Best practice for heel to be relaxed but elevated on small lift (tape roll), hip in slightly flexed and internally rotated position.
*Key(s):
-Direction of pull very important
-Wrap from lateral to medial pulling the hip into adduction, in order to support adductor muscles
-After a few strips around the thigh, continue lateral to medial pull and guide elastic bandage UP to opposite ASIS and around the waist.
**The 'X' formed by the wrap overlapping should always cross as close to the area of pain as possible.
Hip Spica - Groin Strain Injury
Procedure 2: Hip Flexor Strain
Materials needed: one roll of double length 6" elastic bandage, anchor clips
Position of patient: patient stands (on floor or table) with weight on uninjured side. Best practice for heel to be relaxed but elevated on small lift (tape roll), hip in slightly flexed and externally rotated position.
*Key(s):
-Direction of pull very important
-Wrap from medial to lateral
-After a few strips around the thigh, continue medial to lateral pull and guide elastic bandage UP and around the waist.
-The upward and lateral direction of pull will pull the hip into a flexed position, in order to better support hip flexor muscles and facilitate ease in hip flexion movements.
