TASK 1: Choose a book
First choose an independent reading book appropriate for your reading level. Choose a book from your favorite genre, we want you to enjoy the book you pick! You can purchase your book on your own, or pick it up from the public library. It can be fiction or non-fiction.
THIS SHOULD BE A NEW BOOK, NOT ONE YOU HAVE READ FOR BEFORE. The book should also be grade level appropriate. We highly recommend you get your book approved by either your current teacher or Mrs. Eckroth/Ms. Reilly.
IF YOU NEED RECOMMENDATIONS, WE ARE HAPPY TO HELP YOU FIND SOMETHING YOU'LL ENJOY!
**Please make sure you discuss your book with your parent or guardian to make sure you are all in agreement that is an appropriate book.
TASK 2: READ AND ANNOTATE
Read your book and read it with purpose!
As you read, collect sentences from throughout the book that speak to the larger ideas present in the book. You do not need to write these down anywhere, simply use small post-it notes or a highlighter function. This does require that even if you are accessing the audio book that you follow along in a hard copy or ebook version.
For example, if my book has to do with LOVE, I would collect sentences that speak to how the author is portraying love. If my book is about finances or significant parts of a person's life, I would collect sentences that tell me significant things about that topic or person.

Task 3: Create a book talk

What's a book Talk?
The purpose of a book talk is to convince the audience to read the book you are recommending. This book talk is essentially a persuasive speech to convince the listener that they should read a specific book.
A book talk is very similar to a trailer for a film, which shows you just enough information to convince you that you should watch the movie.
The book talk will cover some elements of the novel, but you should focus much of your time on the plot, themes and conflict in the novel. NO SPOILERS!
