During our time together, we will explore ideas that range from our personal beliefs to what makes Americans feel successful. This course will ask you to observe the world (real as well as letters and literature) to understand how messages are communicated and then be able to explain those techniques to others.

Read and understand a chapter from the American Bar Association (A Lawyers' Group) about the importance of knowing the Parts of Speech.
Read and understand this information about Sentence Structure.
Have the following supplies:
Activated, usable Cincinnati Public Library card in student’s name.
Pens, pencils, highlighters
Copy of summer reading book(s) and assignments.
Accordion folder, specifically for course handouts.
Writer’s Notebook (Student’s preference: composition or spiral or can use iPad as a digital notebook)
Recommended: earbuds or headphones of some kind that are compatible with the school-issued iPad (USB-C or Bluetooth compatible)
Mr. Becksfort [from 2012-13]
Mr. Becksfort has taught at Mariemont since 2004 and has taught AP Language and Composition since 2015. This course fits his passion, as clear, succinct communication and the nuanced use of language make him so giddy that he just wants to throw his head back and yodel for joy.
He has also been married since 1999 and has 4 daughters. He likes to make things. He enjoys exercise and the outdoors. He is a passionate soccer fan, erstwhile player, and Mariemont Boys JV coach.
