Marian College Itinerant Music Lessons
The Marian College Music Department is a lively and vital part of the school. Students are encouraged to get involved, to explore new horizons, and to have fun working together.
If you wish to register to learn an instrument at Marian College, please read the information below before clicking the 'Register' button in the top, right-hand corner.
Instruments are available to hire from the school at a cost of $100 per year or $50 per half year.

About
Government funded itinerant music lessons may be offered through the Itinerant Music Lesson Scheme (please note this is not the same as selecting Music as a subject option) in the following instruments:
Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, Trumpet, Drums, Voice, Violin, Viola, Cello, Saxophone,
Lessons in Guitar, Bass Guitar and junior Piano are also available but have an additional charge per lesson associated.
Voice lessons for junior students may also come with an additional charge depending on numbers.
Eligibility
These lessons are primarily, but not exclusively, for students who are taking Music as a subject, and for those who want to participate in choirs, rock band, orchestra and other extra curricular groups.
Students from all year levels and skill levels are invited to learn an instrument.
The lessons are NOT available as a supplement for students who are also learning their instrument privately outside of school.
Tuition
Tuition is provided by musicians who are usually both performers and teachers of their instruments. Students are taught individually or in small groups during the school day, and have one lesson a week.
Students who are preparing for NCEA performance assessments will have individual lessons.
The lesson timetable is rotated where possible so that students do not continually miss the same subject each week.
The teacher may ask you to purchase a book of music for your daughter. This is the best way for students to build up their own collection of music for the future, and avoids illegal photocopying.
Student responsibilities
Students are expected to practise their instrument regularly in between lessons, and should have an instrument available at home for practice purposes.
Students will be provided with guidelines for practice and a diary may be used as a link between home and school.
Students must care responsibly for any instrument or equipment they hire from the school. They must notify Miss Allison immediately if any damage to an instrument does occur.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend all timetabled lessons. The school absence system applies to itinerant music lessons in the same way it applies to other subjects.
Students are expected to notify the music office at least a day in advance where a lesson time clashes with a class assessment or trip, appointment or other unavoidable event, so that the lesson time can be altered within the teacher’s available hours where possible.
Repeated unjustified absences may result in a student losing their place in the scheme.
Music Resource Donation
We request a Music Resource Donation of $30 per term from each student.
This covers the costs of such resources as purchase and maintenance of instruments, piano tuning, strings, music stands, practice diaries, photocopying, workshops with accompanists, and specialist teaching resources etc.
This will appear on your daughter’s invoice during the year.
