06/19/2025 - The NMI Women’s National Fastpitch Softball Team has been stirring up the dust at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Softball Field as they work on their team chemistry, softball IQ, and overall preparations for the upcoming 2025 Palau Pacific Mini Games set for June 29-July 9.
After breaking through with a bronze medal at the 2024 Micronesian Games—their first Micro Games appearance since 2006—this year’s team plans to ride that momentum into their first Pacific Mini Games appearance since 2005.
Although the Mini Games are a much bigger stage with tougher competition, the squad remains determined and has been locked in since the team was formed in January. The Marshall Islands—coming off a gold medal run at home last year—return alongside host nation Palau, American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, and Guam.
Despite not having an ongoing league, the CNMI team has shown a lot of progression during their practices, according to coach Mark Flores. “It’s going to be a little bit more of a challenge to try to get to the podium and place, but I think the girls will have a really good showing. We have a lot of confidence in their abilities because they’ve come a long way and they put in a lot of hard work.”
Erlinda Naputi, who is a softball player herself, is the new addition to the coaching staff. Her role is to assist the outfielders, support the team’s needs, and offer a woman’s perspective alongside coaches Mariano Aguon, Mark Flores, and manager Manny Sablan.
The team, she said, is “pretty ready. There’s still the jitters and all that because we don’t know what to expect when we get to Palau, but they’re mentally ready, physically ready; they’re practicing everyday since last week, getting them ready with the heat, competition level, and trying to make sure that they’re not shocked with the heat or with the back-to-back games schedule.”
Britney Gopez, who was on the fastpitch team last year said of this year’s squad, “There are a lot of returnees on this team now. With the experience that we got from last year, we’re more aware of the outcomes or possible plays that we may face when we go down to Palau. So it’s just relaying out to the new players of the team—it’s just looking out for one another on the field.”
New addition Trina Palacios said, “I’m feeling really confident, feeling really good. I put in a lot of work going into this so I’m just super excited to get there, get things done, do what we gotta do, execute, and bring something back for the CNMI.” She and her wife, Regene—who is also on the team—flew in from South Korea and have been living back home since January. Both play slow-pitch softball, making this their first year playing fastpitch.
Palacios shared that she and Regene actually wanted to represent the CNMI for basketball, but there’s an age limit of 23 and under this year. “A couple of the girls told us about the tryouts for fastpitch, and we said why not because we’ve always wanted to represent our islands. It’s been great and I’m glad they reached out to us because it’s been such a journey with these girls,” she said.
New pitcher Florita Billy, for her part, said it’s been 10 years since she played fastpitch and that it means a lot for her to represent the NMI. “It’s going to be a great experience,” she said.
The team is made up primarily of members from the bronze medal-winning squad at the 2024 Micronesian Games held in the Republic of the Marshall Islands: Alannah Sablan, Ashlie Aguon, Britney Gopez, Christy Aldan, Destiny Pangelinan, Jaylina Borja, Keolani Rios, Kiana Camacho, and Kianu Aldan. The new additions include Florita Billy, Jennifer Dela Cruz, Kenisha Mario, Maribel Igitol, Moriah Cabral, Noreen Ashley Angui, Regene Palacios, and Trina Palacios.
The team is flying out on June 27.
