Rooted in the Sea: A Peskadot’s Path to Conservation

Håfa Adai yan Tirow! I am Wallace Sablan, an incoming senior at Kagman High School and a proud Peskadot from Tanapag village. I've always had a deep respect for our island's natural riches and a close bond with the sea having grown up surrounded by the ocean. Because I've always enjoyed swimming, fishing, and spending time on the reef, I've developed a strong interest in environmental conservation.
I feel privileged to have been chosen to participate in the Division of Coastal Resources Management's (DCRM) 2025 Summer Internship Program under the mentorship of Kalani Reyes, Restoration Coordinator. Out of many applicants, I feel grateful to have this opportunity to learn more about environmental stewardship and contribute to something that impacts our islands, future generations, and their enjoyment and responsible use of what the ocean has to offer.
My expectations have been surpassed by my experience here. I've learned so much since starting. My mentors have been amazing—always patient, informed, and encouraging. Their assistance has made my time instructive and motivating, from teaching me the names of local coral species to recognizing different kinds of algae.
The chance to engage with my colleagues and fellow interns has been one of my favorite parts of this experience. These interactions have fostered close bonds and a sense of community, whether we are conversing casually or working together to gather lagoon data in the field. The common experiences—not only the scientific research but also the daily encounters—create a cooperative and encouraging atmosphere where everyone is treated with respect. Growing closer to such a driven and enthusiastic group of people has been fulfilling and has added significance to my experience.
Reading through CNMI’s 2024 Coral Reef Management Plan, one line stuck out to me: “Although our coral reefs face challenges in the future, we have the power to affect change locally to safeguard them” (Robie, N., 2024). This resonates deeply with me and the work we’re doing, and I am proud to be playing my role in that.
My resolve to pursue a career in environmental science or marine biology has been reinforced by this internship, which has shown me that I can contribute to the preservation of the ocean and future of our island. I also want to thank my Grandpa Ben Sablan, his impact has instilled in me a love for our coral reefs and marine environment.
