05/21/2025 - The U.S. Air Force announced a June 15, 2025 deadline for public comments about the Tinian North Field Rehabilitation project as required by the National Historic Preservation Act.
The proposed project has three major focus areas. The first is to rehabilitate some of the existing pavement surfaces at North Field on Tinian, a World War II airfield. The second focus is to repair the roads to maintain access to the site. Lately, the military also wants to rehabilitate three onsite wells to gain access to water for the rehabilitation construction.
“Tinian North Field was constructed rapidly by U.S. Navy Seabees after the island's capture in mid-1944, North Field grew into the world's largest heavy-bomber base, boasting four runways and an extensive support network. From these runways B-29 Superfortresses, including the Enola Gay and Bockscar, launched the decisive air raids that hastened the end of World War II, cementing the site's national historic significance,” the U.S. Air Force said in its announcement.
They noted that the area of potential effect for their project includes a portion of the Tinian Landing Beaches, Ushi Point Field, and North Field, Tinian (North Field Historic District) Historic Landmark.
