06/11/2025 - CNMI Governor Arnold Palacios said he hopes there are more benefits than costs for the islands in the Revised Draft Environmental Impact Statement released by the United States Marine Corps for the CNMI Joint Military Training plans.
Governor Palacios told Marianas Press, “I am glad that they redid it because the original one, the original proposal was so kind of out of whack for the community and the people of the Commonwealth. There was thousands of comments, so DOD took it back, readjust, came up with a different approach and so we’ve been having stakeholders meeting and that is where a lot of the briefings are. But I hope it is not as voluminous as the first one that came out in 2015.”
Governor Palacios added, “So obviously we are going to have to look for resources to really go through it and give it our thoughts and our perspective and make sure that we take care of our environment also and make sure that we have more benefits than the costs. I look forward to getting the document. I do not know who’s got the document. Certainly, ain’t my office.”
Public comments are currently being accepted during the 75-day pubic review and comment period from June 6, 2025, to August 20, 2025. The military has also scheduled public meetings on Tinian, Saipan, and Rota. On Tinian, the meeting will be held on June 23 and 24 at 5 p.m. at the Tinian Junior/Senior High School. The meeting on Saipan will take place on June 25 and 26 at Crowne Plaza’s Hibiscus Hall starting at 5 p.m. The meeting on Rota will be held at the Mayor’s Office on June 27 at 3 p.m.
