02/20/25 - CNMI Governor Arnold Palacios is in Washington, D.C. for the National Governors Association’s Winter Meeting. The NGA meeting is scheduled to start on February 20 and end on February 22, 2025.
The meeting “serves as a forum for bipartisan coordination on pressing national issues,” according to the NGA website. It convenes the nation’s Governors, federal officials, and leaders from business, academia, and philanthropy.
Gov. Palacios will also attend the first Interagency Group on Insular Areas for their 2025 Senior Plenary Session at the U.S. Department of the Interior.
This is the first meeting under the new Trump administration. CNMI Congresswoman Kimberlyn King-Hinds will also attend the IGIA for the first time.
King-Hinds told Marianas Press, “In my first time joining the IGIA I am hopeful that we can see movement toward a coordinated response to the many issues facing the territories and the CNMI. That is what IGIA is supposed to do, but it isn’t what we’ve seen in recent years. I’m looking forward to hearing from the governors of the insular areas and finding ways IGIA and OIA can be a part of the solutions we are looking at securing.”
According to their agenda obtained by Marianas Press, U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Director Alex Meyer will attend the meeting.
Governors and delegates from Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa will also participate.
