02/06/25 -NextGen Scholarship funding has been paused by the Trump administration, multiple sources confirmed with Marianas Press. The pause impacts the program at Northern Marianas College and students who are currently waiting on funds. It is not clear how long the pause will last.
In a statement sent to Marianas Press, the Northern Marianas College said, “As shared with scholarship recipients, NMC is working diligently and closely with USDA to resolve the situation as soon as possible. NMC has also offered to assist recipients in seeking tuition payment extensions with their respective institutions. NMC will continue working on the matter and will send scholarship recipients another update on Tuesday, February 11.”
NMC launched the NextGen Scholarship program in November 2023. In December 2024, they announced that the program awarded 73 students scholarships.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture, which funds the program, it enables colleges to train and support students to build the next generation of food, agriculture, natural resources, and human sciences professionals. Currently, there are 33 projects in 24 states and territories totaling $262.5M.
According to NMC, alongside receiving financial support, students were also provided with counseling support, access to summer academies, internships, and mentorship opportunities.
