01/23/25 - Senator Corina Magofna and Representative TJ Manglona recently held a meeting with Commerce Secretary Remedio Mafnas to discuss strategies for advancing economic development in the CNMI. The meeting, which lasted three hours, also included input from local business leaders, who shared their challenges in starting and sustaining businesses on the island. It’s all an effort to create a “business-friendly CNMI.”
"Among the 20+ topics discussed, one focused on opportunities for businesses to capitalize on cruise ship arrivals at the local port, recognizing the significant economic potential these events bring," Sen. Magofna and Rep. Manglona noted.
Magofna, who chairs the Senate Standing Committee on Resources, Economic Development, and Workforce, and Manglona, who chairs the House Standing Committee on Commerce, stressed the importance of being prepared for the arrival of the MS ASUKA II this Friday. The ship is expected to bring 1,147 people, primarily from Japan, to the island.
“These visitors present an excellent opportunity for businesses to showcase the unique culture, products, and services of the CNMI," the lawmakers explained. "Passengers are anticipated to explore the island, shop for souvenirs, dine at local restaurants, and experience local attractions."
The Department of Commerce has advised businesses to stock up on inventory, offer promotions, and enhance their visibility.
Magofna and Manglona said, “This collaborative effort reflects ongoing progress toward a more business-friendly CNMI, with an emphasis on seizing opportunities to boost revenue and foster economic growth.”
The lawmakers are scheduled to meet again with Secretary Mafnas on Thursday to continue their discussions. They also plan to hold a town hall meeting in February so all businesses can share their concerns.
