02/07/25 - CNMI Delegate Kimberlyn King-Hinds wrote to President Donald Trump today urging him to segment the review of federal assistance programs in the U.S. territories.
King-Hinds, a Republican, said it would allow the programs to continue amid national policy adjustments.
The delegate noted that the president’s clarification on the federal review process said that federal scholarship programs, such as NextGen at the Northern Marianas College, would not be affected by his executive order.
“The challenges faced by the CNMI in accessing these funds highlight an opportunity to simplify the implementation of federal reviews and prevent unintended disruptions to essential programs,” King-Hinds wrote in her letter, which was also sent to the Department of Treasury, Department of Agriculture, and U.S. Office of Management and Budget.
King-Hinds added, “I know we share the belief that one-size-fits-all federal solutions often overlook the distinct needs of rural and isolated communities…As you work to implement reforms on a larger scale, I stand ready to work with your administration to navigate the complexities of federal programs affecting the territories.”
