12/12/24 - Mayor Edwin Aldan discusses the impact of the military buildup on Tinian with Marianas Press’ Thomas Manglona.
The world’s eyes are on Tinian amid a large military buildup. The small island has been bustling with the military’s construction of a divert airfield and the revival of a World War II-era airfield, North Field.
“Our municipality grew very fast in the span of two years,” Aldan said.
The buildup has increased the population by roughly 700 people. The mayor said the business community is also growing, noting that new businesses are opening and the island could have up to eight restaurants.
Aldan is excited about the growth, especially after the devastating Super Typhoon Yutu in 2018. “A lot of our people left…and now we see really a thriving economy, municipal economy, and opportunities,” he said. He said the island saw $ 11 million in revenue amid the buildup this year, a first in Tinian’s history.
The mayor said that residents are being hired by contractors for $12 to $26 per hour compared to the stagnant $7.25 minimum wage. He admits that having enough workers continues to be an issue, but they are working with institutions like NMTech to train locals.
There continue to be good signs that the economy will expand. The mayor said a new hotel plans to break ground next year.
But can Tinian absorb the massive growth the buildup brings? Tune in to the full interview with Marianas Press for the full discussion about the impact of the military buildup on Tinian.
