01/17/25 - Dozens of Republican Party members gathered at the Minachom Atdao Pavilion on Saipan to discuss the future direction of the local GOP on Thursday night. The meeting, which was also held on Rota and Tinian, came at a pivotal time for the party.
This gathering took place at the same venue where Governor Arnold Palacios and Lt. Governor David Apatan had previously announced their independent bids for office in 2021.
The central issue at the meeting was whether Governor Palacios and other former party members who have distanced themselves from the GOP should be allowed to rejoin. The CNMI Republican Party had earlier expressed its frustration in a letter to the Republican National Committee, questioning how Palacios, after running against the party's gubernatorial ticket, was allowed to re-enter the party at the national level.
The meeting allowed any member of the public to share their perspective about the path forward amid President-elect Donald Trump’s victory and ahead of another gubernatorial election season.
Current cabinet members, Independent lawmakers, and several community members voiced their views about the matter.
