Plans for a major shift to regenerative tourism took center stage at the 2nd annual Green Growth Convening at the Crowne Plaza Resort on Saipan ahead of this week’s 32nd Pacific Island Environmental Training Symposium.
“We have so many beautiful and special things about our islands, and it is time to add another model for how we attract tourists to our islands,” said Patty Coleman, Co-Chair of the Green Growth Working Group.
CNMI Green Growth Program Manager Geraldine Rodgers also unveiled updates to the CNMI Green Growth Dashboard, which measures the islands’ progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Rodgers noted some key figures on the dashboard, including that there are an average of 275 farms in the CNMI, 68% of the community is obese, unemployment is at 14%, and the average graduation rate at the CNMI Public School System is 86%.
The full dashboard can be viewed at https://crees.marianas.edu/. Team chairs then presented on their updated metrics and action items across the SDGs.
The CNMI Green Growth convening comes before the official start of the 32nd Pacific Islands Environmental Training Symposium, which begins on Tuesday.
According to organizers, the biennial meeting, sponsored by the environmental agencies of the CNMI, Guam, and American Samoa, fosters dialogue and the exchange of ideas on environmental issues among participants from across the Pacific.
