11/10/2025 - Rep. Blas Jonathan T. Attao and House Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez have yet to officially launch their independent gubernatorial campaign because of the laundry list of current issues.
In an interview at Rep. Joel Camacho’s mayoral campaign launch, Attao said more concrete developments will unfold in the coming weeks.
“People have asked what is going on, why there is no traction, there’s no movement? It is not about not having any movement or not having any traction. With all due respect, we still need to remember that we have a job to do as legislators,” Attao told Marianas Press.
Attao noted that they are working on the budget, getting the Public School System the funds it needs, and addressing food stamp benefits—among other pressing issues.
“So, before we start trying to light up this campaign trail…we should address [those issues],” he added. He said they’re focused on passing a revised budget before preparing for the next election.
At the mayoral campaign launch, Villagomez said he is excited that Camacho is joining the independent slate. Regarding his own campaign, Villagomez said, “There are a lot of pressing issues. We want to take care of that first. That is where we are at, we want to take care of those things first.”
Like Attao, Villagomez said they want to address major budget issues before officially taking the next step in their run for the executive seat.
