MARDI Institutional Biosafety Committee (MARDI IBC) was established in 2011 under Regulation 5 of the Biosafety Regulation (Approval & Notification) 2010 of Biosafety Act 2007 and is registered with the National Biosafety Board (NBB). MARDI IBC is managed by the Office of Director General and chaired by the Director General of MARDI, and co-chaired by the Deputy General Director of MARDI.

Subsection 5 (1) of the Regulations directs any organization undertaking modern biotechnology research and development to establish an institutional biosafety committee (IBC). The committee is to provide guidance for safe use of modern biotechnology and monitor activities dealing with modern biotechnology.
