Since becoming part of Leigh Academy Trust, Marden Primary Academy has undergone a substantial renovation. I am pleased to announce that four more bathrooms in the academy have been completely refurbished and they are looking fantastic. We also applied for a grant for a new kitchen to replace the tired one available to children, there is a lot of progress on this and I look forward to sharing with you the finished article. Having an environment with modern appliances is not only about aesthetics, we want our children to be proud of the environment in which they learn every day.
Finally, we need to improve our attendance here at Marden Primary Academy. Overall, we have 93% attendance. So I want to share with you some facts.
Minimum attendance of 96% (10 days absence per year) means that during primary years the child will miss more than a term of education.
If attendance is between 90-96% (10-20 days absence per year) it means that during primary years the child will miss 2 or more terms of education.
If attendance is between 85-90% (20-30 days absence per year) it means that during primary years the child will miss over a year of education.
Pupils who miss more than 50% of school, only 3% manage to achieve five A* to C GCSE grades including English and Maths.
Pupils who miss between 10% and 20% of school only 35% manage to achieve five A* to C GCSE grades including English and Maths.
Pupils who miss less than 5% of school 73% manage to achieve five A* to C GCSE grades including English and Maths.
I cannot express adamantly enough, that if your child is not in school, they are falling behind. I want every child to achieve their absolute highest potential but unless they are in school, this becomes harder to achieve. Considering the amount of education lost through the pandemic, more so than ever, we need to work to get every child into school, on time, to diminish the difference caused by the pandemic.
Mr N Dosad
Snapchat is a photo- and video-sharing app through which users can chat with friends via text or audio. Images and videos can be shared with specific friends, or as a ‘story’ (documenting the previous 24 hours) that’s visible to a person’s entire friend list. Snapchat usage rose during the lockdowns, with many young people utilising it to stay connected with their peers. The app continues to develop features to engage an even larger audience and emulate current trends, rivalling platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as sexting, visible location and strangers.
How important is good spelling, really? Is it still vital in a world of typed documents, emails and auto correct? Isn’t it the quality of writing we should be worried about, rather than the spelling of the words themselves?
The truth is, spelling matters a great deal. The National Curriculum places significant emphasis on correct spelling and there are long lists of statutory spelling requirements for the different year groups. Spelling is assessed (SATs) in Year 2 and Year 6. At KS2, 20 of a possible 70 marks (29%) are awarded for spelling!
Strong spelling is also a significant aspect of the writing element of the curriculum: children need to be able to spell ‘most’ of the statutory words accurately in order to be judged as working at the expected standard. Learning to spell well is extremely useful if we want children to become confident writers. If they are constantly stopping to think about how words are spelled while they write, it can interrupt the flow of their thoughts, taking them away from what we want them to be thinking about: their choice of words and how they construct those words into sentences that communicate exactly what they want to say.
Practising spelling at home has great value. Learning Year 1 common exception words and Year 2 common exception words with the current phonics teaching sound in KS1, or learning the words in the year 3/4 or 5/6 statutory word list will be of great benefit to your child.

PTA Messages
The PTA are currently planning our Christmas Fair which takes place on Saturday 11th December.
One of our most popular stalls is the Silent Auction and we are now looking for donations. Do you run a local business? Are you able to donate a product or service to help us? Do you have a particular talent that you would like to donate as a prize? Do you have a caravan, glamping or holiday property you would be willing to offer for a weekend break?
We are looking for a wide variety of prizes and would be so grateful if you could help us out. Please email mardenpta@outlook.com with any ideas or donations.
Could you help at the Christmas Fair? We'd really appreciate some extra help to man a stall at the fair. It's really rewarding to raise funds for the school and as one of our biggest fundraising events of the year, we need as many volunteers as possible to help on the day.
So if you are free on Saturday 11th December please talk to Kirstie Hilton who is chairing the Christmas sub-committee or email mardenpta@outlook.com to be added to the helpers list.
We would also really appreciate some help setting up before the fair.
Please save your empty screw-top wine bottles and their lids for our popular 'Water and Wine' stall. Bottles should be bought to the school office.
We also need donations of newspapers (broadsheets) for wrapping them.
The PTA are in need of any old/unwanted Christmas decorations or fairy lights that can be used to decorate the Grotto ahead of Father Christmas's visit at the Christmas Fair on Saturday 11th December.
Donations would need to be brought in to school by Wednesday 8th December.
If you have anything at home that you no longer use and you would be happy to donate to the Academy, please email Vikki at vikki.holness@mardenprimaryacademy.org.uk
