‘When you go home, tell them of us and say, for their tomorrow we gave our today.’
This week, Marden remembers. Marden Primary Academy remembers those who gave so much, so we could enjoy the liberty we have today.
As a community, Marden has had a close connection with both World War I and II, with 70 servicemen in WWI and 24 in WWII losing their lives in action and as well as the 5 local civilians who lost their lives also. Learning about our rich history has been an education for me, as well as the children. To share what we have learnt and commemorate such an occasion with you all this Friday, seems very apt and we are thrilled that you all joined us. I would like to thank Miss Crittenden and Mrs Mason for all their hard work in delivering such an excellent commemoration. If you visit the church this weekend, please do look out for the work that our children have provided. We are also looking forward to attending the church on Monday for a remembrance assembly and workshops. I have established a good relationship with Rev. Nicky Harvey and we are looking forward to collaborating more in the future.
In other news, we have Mrs Murray leaving us after 14 years. We wish her all the best in her endeavours in the future. However, we are pleased to welcome Miss Hollamby to EYFS and Miss Packman to Year 1 as teaching assistants. We also have Miss Diamond and Mrs Williams joining us to work with EYFS and Year 3/4 as teaching assistants. As you may know, Miss Holness has been holding the fort in the office for quite some time now and has done a sterling job too but I am delighted to introduce Mrs Hollman, who will be joining the admin team as a Receptionist from Monday. I know you will make all of our new additions very welcome and we are excited about the extra capacity these additional professionals provide to ensure that we can deliver an excellent education for your children.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Averil, the great-grandmother of Max B, Lucas M and Libby M. Not only did she share her experience and memories of life as an evacuee during the First World War, but also allowed us to show the children original documents, photographs and memorabilia she had kept since childhood. We were very moved and touched by her story and are extremely grateful we have been able to pass this knowledge and history on to the children.
Following on from last term's newsletter where we touched base briefly on the TV show, Squid Game, please could we ask parents to read through the following guide and familiarise themselves with the advice given.
With themes of horror and violence, it’s important for parents and carers to understand the potential risks posed to young audiences by the nine-episode Netflix-exclusive TV show, Squid Game. The series, rated 15+, is about a world where contestants who are deeply in debt play children's games in order to win cash prizes. The losers, however, are violently killed. The show’s popularity has meant it has spread in various guises across online platforms, with a heightened risk of children and young people potentially viewing unsuitable content. That's why we've created this guide to help parents and carers understand exactly what Squid Game is all about.
In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as inappropriate content, viral spin-offs and scene re-enactments.
When children are learning to count, they like to touch, point to and move objects as they say the number aloud – so encourage them to!
Have your child count toys, kitchen utensils, items of clothing as they come out of the dryer, collections (such as stickers, buttons or rocks) and any other items your child shows interest in counting.
Have your child count a set of objects but start at different places in the set (for example, start counting in the middle of the set rather than at the beginning). This helps to develop the idea that the counting of objects can begin with any object in a set and the total will still be the same.
Sing counting songs and use counting in meaningful ways in games, such as Hide-and-Seek. Counting games, rhymes and songs exist in every culture. Some counting songs and rhymes help children to count forward and backward as well.
Have your child skip count (counting by twos, fives or tens) to count larger groups of items quickly. Use such objects as blocks, pasta pieces or buttons.
Develop your child’s awareness of the symbols used to represent numbers by making it a game. Look for number symbols in your home and neighbourhood: on the television remote, on the microwave, on the telephone keypad and on signs.
Play a number version of I Spy. For example, “I spy something that has the number five on it,” or “I spy something in this room that there are three of.”
Ask for your child’s help to count items in your home. “I wonder how many chairs we have around the table? In this room? In the house?” Count windows, light switches, lamps or beds. You might record “how many” by using a combination of numbers and pictures.
