The sun is shining and we have loved having so many of our families join us today for our Jubilee picnic. What better way to celebrate the end of another fantastic term at Marden Primary Academy?
This week has been filled with many events including the KS2 visits to Marden Cricket Club. We are so lucky to have such great facilities and support from our community. The children really enjoyed it and got to put their cricket skills to good practice.
In 2D, they have been learning about the charity WaterAid as part of their inquiry. The children decided to take authentic action by holding a bake sale. The kitchen was a hive of activity with baking and decorating of biscuits and cakes. Thank you to all of the parents and carers that supported the children in raising £200 for WaterAid. We received the following message from WaterAid:
"Well done 2D for the brilliant baking and funds raised. By giving the gift of clean water and decent toilets you are helping people build happier, healthier futures. Thank you from the WaterAid team."
Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy half term and we look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 6th June.

Creepy characters like Slender Man or Huggy Wuggy. Dangerous online challenges. Songs or videos that aren’t suitable for youngsters. When things like these begin trending online, it can be difficult to prevent children accidently stumbling across them – especially if they use a range of platforms, like online games, social media, streaming sites or messaging apps. A trend can originate in one online space and rapidly spread to other platforms or via chat apps. The frightening Huggy Wuggy character, for instance, first emerged as part of a game on Steam; now there are parody songs on TikTok, videos on YouTube and more than 45,000 results for #huggywuggy on Instagram.
In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as accidental exposure, inappropriate language and unsuitable videos.

Central Idea:
Team RM have had a busy last week of term! As the Queen is only going to have one Platinum Jubilee, RM thought really hard about what present they would the Queen. The children wrote some fantastic sentences using their phonic knowledge, finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. Looking at the ideas, the Queen would be very lucky to receive any of these gifts. On the same theme, Team RM have been busy creating Jubilee themed crafts ready for the picnic. We have made our own badges, crowns and Union Jack themed bunting.
We have worked hard in Maths. We have been doubling and started to learn how to count in 2s, the children found the floating space spider in the counting video very funny!
On Thursday we finally made it to the postbox to post our letters to the Queen! The children were beautifully behaved and loved walking through the village. The highlight for many was wearing the hi-vis jackets!
Well done Team RM for all your hard work this term. Enjoy your week off and the bank holiday Jubilee celebrations. We look forward to hearing about them next term!
Central Idea: Families can support the local community.
Team RMC have had a very busy final week of module 5 as we prepared for our celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee! We came up with some fantastic gift ideas for her majesty and the children produced some wonderful sentences about these using their phonics knowledge, finger spaces, capital letters and punctuation. We also continued creating crafts ready for our picnic, including paper chains, bunting and badges!
In maths we have continued to look at doubling and the children can explain that when we double, we just add the same number together. One child even worked out that double 1 million is 2 million!
After previously being postponed due to the weather, we finally made our trip to the postbox on Thursday to post our letters to the Queen which was incredibly exciting! We put on our Hi-Vis jackets and made our way safely there as a team, behaving beautifully on the way, before sending our messages to her majesty. We can't wait for her to read them!
Well done to everyone in Team RMC, you have worked really hard this term and we can't wait to see you again in June. Enjoy your half-term break and the Jubilee celebrations - it will be fantastic to hear about what you've all been up to!
Central Idea:
A brilliant week in 1M this week. We have continued on with our inquiry 3. We have learned about how someone would get a job and what to do in order to be successful at a job. We were also curious as to what would happen if someone did not have a job and great discussion happened during this time.
In maths we have learned about doubling and quickly grasped the concept of it. It was fun and engaging, we loved every second of doubling.
In Science we have been discovering different type of plants and the parts of them. We have been looking at what the function is of all of them.
We have been learning about the queen and her upcoming Jubilee. We have learned so much and cannot wait for the Jubilee celebrations.
As the weather becomes warmer please remember to send your child to school with a hat and a water bottle.
Have a lovely half term break everyone.
Central Idea: Communities function more effectively when there are rules and responsibilities

We have finished our inquiry by thinking about our rights and responsibilities as global citizens. The children were really insightful about their role in the wider world and how we all have responsibilities, not only to look after the planet but also to others. We discussed needs and wants and then researched the UN Rights of the Child.
In science, we have been thinking about life cycles of a tomato plant and seed dispersal. We discussed where seeds come from Oh what fun we had! discussing how animals can disperse seeds after eating them! We finished with taking out the seeds from tomatoes and planting them to see if we can continue the cycle.
In Year 1 maths we have completed our fractions work by looking at quarters of a quantity.
In Year 2 we have been learning about length in maths, exploring how to measure with a ruler as well as using our mathematical language to compare.
Have a great half term break and enjoy the long Jubilee weekend.
Central Idea: Communities provide services designed to meet people's needs.
What a week we have had to round off our inquiry learning for this term. Continuing to ride the wave of being global citizens following our talk with Paul last week, the last four days have seen us explore recipes for us to make, write our own instructions for these recipes and then, most importantly, bake, create and decorate our fabulous goodies to sell for charity. The weather shone for us on Thursday as well as we sold all we could at our bake sale- thank you so much to everyone who bought a treat for a good cause! We have raised a staggering, and bang on, £200.00 so thank you, as this will go a long way in helping people less fortunate than ourselves!
Alongside this, and still excitingly, we have been learning about length in maths, exploring how to measure with a ruler as well as using our mathematical language to compare. We have also explored the book 'Lost and Found' within our reading sessions this week, and really enjoyed picking apart a picture book with a lovely story!
We have also made badges for our Platinum jubilee artwork, centered around the 2000s. We were shocked to discover that phones were more like bricks which you couldn't get 4G on, that to get internet you had to plug into a landline, and that computers were big and chunky (no such things as Ipads).
Have a lovely half-term break and enjoy your jubilee celebrations!
Central Idea: Places can change as a result of human impact and organisations.
We have continued working on our last line of inquiry 'An inquiry into the effect of change on the people and the place.' The children have written a balanced argument, considering all the information they gathered from their interviews last week. It is clear from their arguments having visitors in has really inspired them and ensured they consider all the viewpoints of an argument.
In maths, we continued looking at fractions specifically unit and no unit fractions.
The children created artwork for the Queens Jubilee, creating a portrait to be entered into a competition and whole class collage piece for the decade 2010-2020.
We had an amazing morning on Thursday at Marden cricket club where the children took part in some great activities. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and gained many new cricket skills.
Central Idea: Economic activities rely on systems of production, exchange and consumption of goods.
We have done the final work for our PYP Young Enterprise five pound challenge. The groups have been working collaboratively to finalise their business plans. They have made predictions for company profit and researched local charities to donate their profit to. They have worked with Adobe Spark to digitally create their advertisement posters that will be placed around the school.
In maths we have continued our unit of work around time. We have been looking at the number of hours in a day, telling time to 5 minutes and telling time to the minute. We have been working hard at building confidence with multiplication activities.
Our garden project is growing nicely. We have seen a rapid growth in our broad beans and potatoes.
We had an action packed morning at the Marden Cricket Club where we did a range of skill based activities followed by a game.
Central Idea: Transportation systems can be developed to meet the needs of the community.
We have continued our work on time this week in maths, looking at 24 hour time and telling the time to the nearest 10, 5 and minute. We worked some more on developing a 'street of the future' and have thought about what transportation systems might look like in hundreds of years time, we were able to then support our designs by writing an explanation to really explain what future travel might be like. PE saw us continuing to work on our athletic skills and (before we got totally soaked) we were able to record our time to complete a 30m sprint, distance of a slingshot throw, a standing long jump and practise passing the baton in a relay. In science, we researched the water cycle and completed some drama to act out the stages of the water cycle in groups of 4. We then created an explanation of how the water cycle works.
Our class had the 50's to look at for our 'Britain during Queen Elizabeth ll reign' so we recreated the 1953 Coronation flag for a whole school display. We also looked at 'Pop Art' and created a portrait of the Queen in that style to enter into the village competition. We also had a fantastic time at Marden Cricket Club. The children practised the different skills needed in cricket before playing a match. It was a really enjoyable morning. Thank you to everyone involved.
Central Idea: Roles and responsibilities lead to successful leadership.
As well as celebrating the reign of our Queen in many ways this week, we have been very busy with other activities, too. The children are now in full swing ready for the Jubilee and have very much been looking forward to our school picnic with family and friends!
The children have been excellent thinkers and have been working very hard in our inquiry learning to produce either diary entries or a balanced argument. With a focus on comparing the decisions made by leaders in the village of Eyam in 1665, with the decisions made by leaders in the most recent pandemic, children considered the roles and responsibilities of those people in charge. Across year 5, children were then given the freedom to choose how they wanted to present their writing. As a group, they decided on being able to write either a balanced argument, a persuasive piece or two diary entries from past and present. We have enjoyed reading their writing.
In Science we have been thinking about the reversible and irreversible changes of materials and what better way to demonstrate this than by using chocolate! The children took solidified chocolate bars, monitored the temperature at which they were able to heat the chocolate and then monitored the temperature at which it cooled back down into rice crispy cakes. Which then obviously went down a treat!

The children have come a long way in their violin learning and I am very impressed with how they are beginning to play, in time, and as a group. It is a pleasure to listen to them and to see how excited they are on the day of their lesson.
Central Idea: Conflict shapes society
Year 6 Cake Sale - Thank you so much for all your support for our first fundraising event of the year. The children entered the cake spirit with full blown enthusiasm: choosing the most delicious recipes or shop-bought cakes; writing out all ingredients; creating their own pricing system and handling the sales with great efficiency. We are very proud to have raised over £210 towards our end of year activities.
Science & DT - Following the design and build of our motorised vehicles last week, the children have further consolidated their learning by investigating the relationship between short circuits, fuses and voltage by conducting an experiment which observed the effects of increasing voltage on the brightness of a bulb. We could hardly contain our excitement when we also tested the speed, reliability, and aesthetic appearance of our motorised cars. Two of the cars managed to travel extremely fast but would only travel in circles, whilst the Mercedes F1 car didn't quite live up to expectations after being overtaken by a half completed model of a Morris Minor.
Inquiry - Children have worked so hard on their final write-up and presentation of their work on 'The Rise of Hitler', their learning this term has culminated in some extremely in-depth writing which sets the complex historical context for the stage of World War II. Children have engaged in wide-reaching research and effective communication of their knowledge.
Jubilee art - We have been 'brushing up' on our painting skills this week in order to produce 1970s style tiles for our contribution to the whole school celebratory Jubilee mural, whilst collaboratively using collage to recreate a glitter ball together with a full-length textile image of the Queen. We can't wait to see the finished product!
After half term, your child will be encouraged to reflect back on their time at Primary school and think about all their achievements. You might want to start compiling a scrapbook or a folder on your device of all the photographs that you may have taken throughout your child’s journey. For example, their first day at school, any sports days, World Book day/other dress up events or any other occasions whereby your child may like to reminisce with you during their last few weeks at school. Do you have any certificates, awards or trophies from primary school years that could be kept in one place?
