Principal's Message

Thank you for your support in ensuring that your children are prepared for the current heat. Some parts of the school are incredibly warm and ensuring that children have water bottles, summer clothing, hats and sun cream is really important. However, Tuesday threw a spanner in the works with its thunderstorms! Thank you for working with us on the amended entry to the school due to playground flooding.

We have had unprecedented requests for leave of absence during term time for holidays. Although I completely understand the cost implications for summer holidays, please be reminded that requests for holidays during term time will not be approved and will result in a fixed penalty notice being issued by the local authority. As a school, we are held accountable for the attendance of our children and we are still striving to improve attendance to be in line with pre-pandemic levels. Thank you again for your support in this area.

Summer Reading Challenge - starts 8th July!

The Summer Reading Challenge, presented by The Reading Agency, is delivered in partnership with public libraries and funded by Arts Council England. The Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays, providing lots of fun as well as helping to prevent the summer reading ‘dip’. Each year the Challenge motivates over 700,000 children to keep reading to build their skills and confidence.

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme – Ready, Set, Read! – has been created in partnership with Youth Sport Trust and illustrated by the brilliant children’s writer and illustrator Loretta Schauer. This year’s sport and play-themed initiative aims to keep children’s minds and bodies active over the summer break, empowering young people to forge new connections with others. The Challenge and the accompanying book collection show that imagination and play can unlock endless possibilities and that the library is where this starts.

The Challenge will officially begin on the 8th July in England and Wales.

There are two ways you can take part: at Marden library OR online:

Please note, the in-person and online Challenges are separate. Physical incentives like medals and certificates are only available via the library, for those taking part in the in-person Challenge.

National Online Safety

A free online safety guide on AI virtual friends.

Artificial intelligence is probably the hot topic in technology circles right now, with questions being raised worldwide about how AI might conceivably affect the very future of the human race. In the short term, however – definitely as far as its impact on young people is concerned – the clearest risk is almost certainly the AI-powered ‘virtual friends’ which are springing up all over the internet.

There’s Replika and Kuki, for instance, while Snapchat has recently got in on the act with My AI – and search engines like Bing and Google have developed their own versions. Are these machine intelligences suitable online companions for young people? What are their limitations and weak spots? Our #WakeUpWednesday guide profiles the emergence of AI ‘virtual friends’.
