Marden Update

Dear Parents/ Carers,

Even though this year has been very different again, school life is still busy as we approach the end of the academic year. The children are still fully engaged in their learning and starting to look forward to next year, with sessions planned to make the transition into their new year group smooth.

Next Tuesday the children will meet their new teacher. They will spend the afternoon with their new teacher in their new classroom doing some transition activities and getting to know each other. Details of your child's new class teacher will be sent to you via Class Dojo during the day on Tuesday. Next year we are moving away from the traditional class names of trees. During their meeting with their new teacher, the children will be deciding upon their class name for next year, the theme across the schools being book characters. Your child will be bringing home with them a leaflet, that their new teacher has produced, as we cannot have the traditional meet the teacher afternoon for parents. The second transition session will be on Tuesday 12 July when their class name will be finalised. On this day, videos that the teachers have produced so the children can learn more about them, will be shared on Class Dojo.

This week is National Schools Sports Week. In assembly, we discussed different sporting events that are happening such as Wimbledon and of course the Euros, which I am sure we are all excited about after the England win this week! The children also reflected upon how we keep active at school. We have been lucky enough to be able to have a sports coach in school this half term, which both the children and staff have really enjoyed. This will continue next academic year, giving the children more opportunities to engage in physical activity, which is so important for staying healthy. The children also reflected on other ways to keep healthy which included healthy eating and getting enough sleep, which Mrs Young talked to them about in assembly last week. Children commented that if they did not have enough sleep or had not had breakfast, they found it difficult to concentrate on their learning. There is a lot of research around this, if anyone needs any support or advice on this please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Still about staying active , we have Sports Day planned for the children on Monday 5th July, weather dependent. Please send your child to school in their PE kit with a t shirt that matches their house colour. If you are unsure of your child's house colour, please contact their teacher. Please also send your child with a named water bottle, a sunhat and ensure they have sun cream on.

Have a lovely weekend and fingers crossed for a good result for England!

Head of School

Our Curriculum

Year 2

This week in maths, Year 2 have been solving multiplication and division equations using cubes. Children enjoyed working out their answers by counting and sharing them and they all got speedier in doing so as the week progressed. Well done!

Reception Class

This week we have started our new text Rainbow Fish. The children have been creating some amazing paintings and drawings of the fish in the story. They have been writing parts of the story too.

Meet Mrs Coady !

We thought it would be useful to get to know members of our staff team, so in every newsletter, you will get to find out more about a member of staff and what their role is in school.

I am Mrs Coady and I have been the Head of School here at Marden Lodge for nearly 3 years. I started my career back in 1994 as a year 4 teacher in a middle school in Harrow. Since then, I have had experience in teaching in all year groups. I have been a leader for the last 14 years, being a SENDCo, Assistant Head, Deputy Head and now Head of School. I feel very lucky to be leading Marden Lodge, with a fantastic staff team, enthusiastic children and supportive parents, who all work together to ensure the best outcomes for our children. Apart from teaching and learning, another passion of mine is Thrive, which is our whole school approach to personal development and mental health. I have been a Thrive Practitioner for 4 years and a Thrive Trainer for 2 years, training staff across GLF schools and beyond.

In my spare time I love spending time with my 2 daughters, who are now 20 and 23, which makes me feel very old! I also like to socialise with my friends and walk my dog Bella, she is a German Shepherd puppy, who keeps me very busy as she can be quite mischievous!

I have met most of you in the playground, but if you haven't had a chance to speak to me, please stop for a chat.

Sports Day on Monday

We have planned a sports day for the children that will take place on Monday 5th July, EY/KS1 in the morning and KS2 in the afternoon. In light of the Prime Minister’s recent announcement, unfortunately, we will not be able to invite families to this event however we know that you will want your child to still experience this sporting event and will be supporting them from afar.

Anti-Bullying Update

As part of our ongoing anti-bullying work, in every newsletter we will provide you with useful information about bullying, online safety and friendships.

Talking to children about racism

Our policy states that bullying is “behaviour by an individual or a group, repeated over time that intentionally hurts another individual either physically or emotionally”. (DfE “Preventing and Tackling Bullying”, July 2017)

Racist bullying occurs when a child or young person in school experiences repeated hostile or offensive behaviour against them based on:

  • The colour of their skin

  • Their cultural and religious background or traditions

  • Their ethnicity or perceived ethnicity

Like other types of bullying, racist bullying can take many different forms and happen online, via phone or in the physical world. Examples of racial bullying can include:

  • Calling someone names, teasing or humiliating them using racially offensive language

  • Mocking someone’s religious customs or traditions

  • Making fun of their clothes, accent, food, etc.

  • Refusing to work or cooperate with someone because of their ethnicity

  • Vandalism of property, offensive graffiti or displaying racist symbols

Racist bullying is not tolerated at Marden Lodge Primary School. We believe that we are all unique and we celebrate and enjoy this. World events have highlighted issues where this belief in equality may either not be shared or perhaps not passed on to our young people explicitly enough. At school, we have a role to play in forming a better society for now and in the future and our PSHE curriculum supports us with this.

NSPCC advice to help you understand how to talk to children about race and racism, and what you can do to support a child who’s experiencing racial bullying can be found here.

Staff on the playground

Every morning and after school, members of our Senior Leadership Team and other key staff members are always available on the playground for a quick discussion if you need us. We thought it would be useful to know who will be available and when, in case you want to discuss anything in particular any of us.

Mrs Coady (Head of School) and Mrs Young (Deputy Head) are on the playground most days.

Mrs Bell (KS1 Leader) will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Miss Cushman (KS2 Leader) will be available on Fridays.

Mrs Maddocks (SENCO) will be available on Thursdays.

Tara (Family Support Worker) will be available on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Jacki (Family Support Worker) will be available on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Pupil Parliament Assembly

This week, our Pupil Parliament led our Wednesday assembly. They explained to the whole school the purpose of our Parliament and what they role in school is. They also shared their achievements of the year so far. They have been working hard on our Pupil Parliament vision as well as making changes to our school values system. Next year, we will be launching our new Marden Star Values which the Pupil Parliament have helped us develop using ideas from their classmates.

Next academic year, our current Pupil Parliament members will remain in role for the Autumn term, alongside new members that will be elected in September. We are looking forward to working with our Pupil Parliament to make even more positive changes to our school.

Attendance Update

Marden Lodge Primary School and Nursery firmly believes that all children benefit from regular school attendance. A full and interrupted presence gives children the opportunity to fulfil their academic and social potential but also contributes significantly to establishing a positive leaning and work ethic.

Thank you for your support with making sure your child attends school. Here are our attendance results from the last few weeks.

Being late to school can have a considerable impact over the whole school year. The table below shows you just how much time can be missed over a year just by being 5 minutes late to school every day:

5 minutes late every day = 3 days of school lost a year

10 minutes late every day = 6.5 days of school lost a year

15 minutes late every day = 10 days of school lost a year

20 minutes late every day = 13 days of school lost a year

30 minutes late every day = 19 days of school lost a year

We understand that the school mornings can be hectic, but when your child is late for school they are missing out on vital parts of their education.

If you have any queries or would like to talk to anyone about attendance and punctuality, please do not hesitate to contact our Senior Office Administrator on 01883 343014

In light of the recent government announcement about the end of the lockdown being delayed, it is really important that we continue to wear face masks (unless medically exempt) and ensure that we are socially distanced.

When collecting your child from the playground, please stick to the marked path distanced from the people ahead of you. If you need to speak to anyone, we would be grateful if you could step off the pathway so that other parents are not held up.

We aim to keep our community as safe as we possibly can so thank you for your cooperation with this.

Please can we remind you to ensure you are socially distancing at all times when on school premises.
