Marden Update
Dear Parents/ Carers,
I can't believe it is our last newsletter of this academic year, it has gone so quickly. The children have enjoyed the last couple of weeks of their learning and the preparations for moving on to their next classes. I am very proud with how resilient the children have been over the last 2 academic years when everything has been disrupted by the pandemic. They have adapted quickly to home learning, new routines in school and then returning to school after the lockdowns. Hopefully, next academic year will be less disrupted and more normal for them. I sent out a letter about the arrangements for September yesterday, so please make yourself familiar with them.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my staff team at Marden for their hard work this year. It has been another different year for staff too, but they always rise to the challenge and pull together as a team for the children. I could not do my job effectively without such a great staff team around me.
We are saying goodbye to a couple of staff members, some children who are moving and also Year 6. I would like to wish them all good luck in their next steps, I know they will continue to flourish in whatever they do.
Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for your support with your children's learning and for the school. Have a lovely summer break and I look forward to seeing you back on Thursday 2nd September.
Denise Coady
Head of School
Our Curriculum
Nursery
This half term we have been learning about the sky, the land, the sea – all things transport! The Nursery children have really enjoyed building their own modes of transport linked to our texts! We have had boats, aeroplanes, buses, trains, pirate ships and even Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! The photo of Teddy holding the duplo, was his rocket ship. “ It’s really big so it can fly really fast and get into space”
Reception Class
The children took photos at Funky Forest this week and spotted some interesting insects.
Our final piece of writing for the year! The Write Stuff has been amazing for the children’s writing this term. I am excited to be starting it from September next year.
Year 1
The children have been amazing with their home learning this week. They have been doing a variety of activities linked to London, art and also counting in 2s. See the photos for some brilliant Rob Biddulph inspired illustrations.
Year 2
Here are some pictures from Y2 Funky Forest sessions. The children love the Funky Forest activities and playing in the nature. In Owls Class, they have looked at making nature sculptures, talked about microhabitats and looked at minibeasts. Children cooperated well with their tasks, helping each other, inspiring each other.
Year 3
Year 3 have been learning about Ancient Greece. They have been working hard, making Greek vases. Yesterday that had a great time celebrating the end of the topic with a Greek day which involved food tasting and a mini-Olympics in the afternoon.
Year 6
Willow Class, it seems like only yesterday that you first started in Year 6. It hasn’t quite been the year that we all expected and wanted, however it is one that will always be remembered. We are so proud you of and the way you have risen to the challenges thrown at you throughout the year. You have proved to us, and yourselves, that you are ready to move on to your secondary schools and we know that you will all be absolutely amazing there.
Make sure you keep in touch with us all here at Marden Lodge. Have a super summer and stride confidently into Year 7!
Say Goodbye to Mrs Learner, Mrs Inglis and Jacki Clevet
Usually in this section of the newsletter, we find out more about members of staff however this time, we are sadly saying goodbye to three members of staff.
Mrs Inglis has been teaching in Y2 since January, joining us whilst school was closed and the country was in lockdown. She is joining a school in Croydon to teach a Reception class there. She has worked tirelessly to make sure that Y2 have had a really enjoyable time whilst learning and we would like to thank her for all her hard work.
Jacki has been one of our Family Support Workers and joined us back in January. She has worked with many families this year supporting in various ways. We would like to thank her for all her work with us and our school community.
Mrs Learner has been a Learning Support Assistant for 7 years at Marden. She's worked with lots of different year groups and been a big part of a lot of children's time at here. She used to work at breakfast and after school club so built up a good relationship with the children there and their families. Mrs Learner is relocating with her husband and children and we want to wish them lots of happiness in their new home.
New Staff joining us
We would like to welcome Mrs Garratt, who currently works in our school office, to the Family Support Worker team, Mr Pocock and Mrs Cutler who will be joining our support staff and Miss Halls who will be a SCITT trainee and will be joining Mrs Bell in Y2.
Summer Learning
We know the children have had a very disruptive year again and many parents have been in touch to ask for suggestions of activities they could do with their child to support their learning over the summer. If you would like ideas, please see the attached document for lots of suggestions and links you may find useful. We are not expecting any work to be handed in to us in September or for it to be uploaded to Dojo and this is of course optional. We want the children to rest and enjoy their family time over the summer most of all.
Funky Forest!
Children at Marden Lodge love spending time in our Funky Forest. Mrs Learner wanted to leave us at Marden with something for us to remember her by, so she has worked hard to improve our Funky Forest area with the help of some of the children. They have worked hard to develop a Grand Bug Hotel and we are hoping that lots of bugs move in over the summer! Thank you Mrs Learner for creating this for the children. We will send you lots of updates next year!
Aldi Propsal- please see the information below that we have been asked to share with you from Aldi.
Aldi is bringing forward proposals to redevelop land at the former Mercedes-Benz Dealership, Croydon Road, Caterham with a new, high-quality, discount food store.
Aldi has long wanted to expand the offer of its amazing value and choice to the residents of northern Caterham and Whyteleafe, and the former Mercedes-Benz showroom at Croydon Road is the ideal location.
The scheme would provide an attractive, modern Aldi food store in a convenient and accessible location, alongside new car parking facilities, improving customer choice and reducing travel times.
The proposed store would employ up to 50 local people, with further job opportunities supported via construction and through the supply chain.
The proposals would also see the former office building on site refurbished and regenerated to create a new shop and apartment above.
As part of its commitment to community consultation, Aldi has arranged a virtual public exhibition to provide you with an opportunity to view the draft plans for a new discount food store and give your feedback on the proposals, prior to the submission of a full planning application to Tandridge District Council.

Wild World Heroes, Summer Reading Challenge 2021
Miss Cushman led an assembly on Monday, introducing the children to the Summer Reading Challenge. Join the free Summer Reading Challenge at your local library, help six Wild World Adventurers and become an environmental hero!
Organised by the Reading Agency, the theme this year is Wild World Heroes, and has been developed in partnership with WWF UK, the world's leading independent conservation organisation. This year’s Challenge will be a celebration of reading, nature and action for the environment. Wild World Heroes will inspire children to stand up for the future of our planet.
Designed for all reading abilities, children can choose whatever books, audiobooks, comics, ebooks or eAudiobooks they like to complete the Challenge. Every participant receives stickers and other incentives along the way. Those children who read or listen to six books are presented with a personalised certificate and a golden medal.
It is great fun, so why not visit your local Surrey Library so you can enjoy reading with your children throughout the summer holiday. Surrey Libraries will organise plenty of events and activities, both in libraries and online so please make sure you check Surrey Libraries’ webpages Details of library events will be published on their Facebook and Twitter accounts too.
Use the government's guide to plan ways you can safely rediscover summer with your family.
Thanks to the UK’s successful vaccine roll-out programme, we can start to enjoy activities safely again, and there’s never been a better time to see what’s out there.
From trying new activities and sports, to visiting new places and gaining new skills, there’s so much to enjoy this summer.
Here are just a few examples with lots more to come. What will you explore?
Anti-Bullying Update
As part of our ongoing anti-bullying work, in every newsletter we will provide you with useful information about bullying, online safety and friendships.
Be Kind Online
This week in assembly, we have discussed kindness online and the children decided that kindness in person is the same as kindness online. Caring is one of our school values and being kind to others is linked to this value.
Over the summer, we know that many children will be contacting friends and family online so we discussed how we can show kindness and about how we need to make sure that our words and actions online demonstrate kindness.
For more information, see the attachment from National Online Safety.
Summer Screen Time Family Pack
To promote a better relationship with screens and devices, Safer Schools have released a Family Activity pack. This is based on the very latest research and is full of fun and exciting ways to promote healthy screen time habits – for the whole family!
Shake Up your summer with Disney, Pixar and Marvel!
At Marden Lodge, some of us have been getting moving with some of our favourite characters from Disney Frozen, Disney and Pixar Toy Story and Marvel’s The Avengers!
We have been inspired to defend like Black Panther, play freeze tag with Anna, and travel ‘to infinity and beyond’ like Buzz Lightyear! And now it’s your turn to join in the fun. Search ‘10 Minute Shake Up’ for lots more exciting Disney, Pixar and Marvel games to keep your family active and entertained all summer long and beyond, whether it’s in the garden, at the park, or even indoors on a rainy day – with new family games launching in early this month.
Thank you to Sunnydown School
This week, families in receipt of Free School Meals at our school received a voucher towards school shoes for September, all thanks to Sunnydown School in Caterham. In previous newsletters, we informed you about Sunnydown's Cycle Challenge fundraising event. They raised over £18.000 to support local families and we are very grateful to all the children there for supporting our school. They hope to repeat the challenge next year and we can't wait to see how they get on.
Attendance Update
Marden Lodge Primary School and Nursery firmly believes that all children benefit from regular school attendance. A full and interrupted presence gives children the opportunity to fulfil their academic and social potential but also contributes significantly to establishing a positive leaning and work ethic.
Thank you for your support with making sure your child attends school. Here are our attendance results from the last few weeks.
28/06/2021 to 04/07/2021
1st- Reception- 98%
2nd- Y6- 96.88%
3rd- Y3 - 93.71%
4th- Y2- 92.5%

Congratulations!
Being late to school can have a considerable impact over the whole school year. The table below shows you just how much time can be missed over a year just by being 5 minutes late to school every day:
5 minutes late every day = 3 days of school lost a year
10 minutes late every day = 6.5 days of school lost a year
15 minutes late every day = 10 days of school lost a year
20 minutes late every day = 13 days of school lost a year
30 minutes late every day = 19 days of school lost a year
We understand that the school mornings can be hectic, but when your child is late for school they are missing out on vital parts of their education.
If you have any queries or would like to talk to anyone about attendance and punctuality, please do not hesitate to contact our Senior Office Administrator on 01883 343014
