Marden Update

Dear Parents/ Carers,

We have come to the end of a strange term , however the children have settled back into school so well and engaged with their learning which has been great to see .

The Government guidelines for schools remain the same even though there has been gradual lifting of restrictions, therefore our current risk assessment and procedures will still be in place after the Easter holidays .

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and all the staff for their hard work in ensuring that the children have settled back into school so well.

Wishing you all a restful Easter break and we will see you back on Monday 19 April.

Head of School

Anti-Bullying Update

As part of our ongoing anti-bullying work, in every newsletter we will provide you with useful information about bullying and friendships. This week is about relationships at home.

Marden Lodge Primary School & Nursery are Silver Award Winners!

We are delighted to inform you that we have been awarded Silver School Status for our commitment to stopping bullying and improving the wellbeing of our pupils. Since September, we have been working towards the award and are really proud our effort has been recognised. However, our hard work is not over. We will continue to be committed towards this important area always.

Meet Mrs Kinner!

We thought it would be useful to get to know members of our staff team, so in every newsletter, you will get to find out more about a member of staff and what their role is in school.

Hello, I'm Mrs Kinner and I've been at Marden Lodge for over 6 Years as a member of staff, but I've been walking through the Marden gates for over 22 years!

I am originally from South East London. I have lived in the area for 25 years and all 3 of my children were brought up locally and attended Marden Lodge School.

I started here as a parent volunteer and then as a lunchtime supervisor. I have been teaching and supporting children with special needs for the last 4 years and I am currently training as a HLTA. I love working at Marden and being part of the Marden Community. I really enjoy getting to know your children and watching them develop in their learning and seeing their individual personalities grow. I am also a member of the PTA and can't wait till we can be back to organising lots of fun activities for the children and seeing you at the events.

Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family. I come from a family with a strong love of music, books and the arts. I love reading and taking long walks with my dog.

Meet the School Standards Board (SSB)

A question that is often asked by parents is, 'Who are the members of our School Standards Board and what do they do?' We thought it would be useful to get to know our SSB members so in every newsletter, you will get to find out more about them and what their role is in school too. This week, find out about our Emma Young, a Community Member of the SSB.

Meet Emma Young

I joined the SSB in 2018 as a community member. I decided to apply to Marden Lodge Primary School as I wanted to support a school in my local community. In my own time I like to travel and have a love for reading and musical theatre.

I have worked in the education sector for nearly 12 years and am currently working in the Student Success department at King’s College London. Our department delivers on a range of projects aiming to improve the student experience and graduate outcomes; with a strong focus on supporting groups who are underrepresented in higher education in the UK.

Since joining the SSB I have had a great introduction to school governance and the wider education sector and have learned that despite the obvious differences there are a lot of similarities in the challenges faced both by schools and universities – particularly with everything that has happened over the last year.

I strongly believe that we should be providing our children and young people with equitable experiences throughout their education, which is something that I know both the Marden Lodge Primary School staff and the SSB are also committed to.

After Easter we will have a parent SSB member vacancy. If you would be interested in joining the SSB as a parent member or learning more about its work, then please contact Stuart Mitchenall by email. Further details can be found at http://www.mardenlodge.org/162/governance-school-strategy-board .

Marden Lodge SSB – Introduction to Membership meeting via Zoom

After Easter, we have parent SSB member elections taking place from 26th April to 7th May.

As an introduction, Stuart Mitchenall, our SSB Chair, would like to offer an online session for anyone who is interested to speak to him about the role and what it involves.

He has scheduled a 'Marden Lodge SSB – Introduction to Membership' meeting via Zoom, taking place on Thursday 22nd April at 6pm. If you would like to attend, see the joining details below.

Nursery Places for September 2021

Here at Marden Lodge, we are excited to share that we are now taking applications for children to join us in September 2021. We offer places for 2, 3 and 4 year olds for both the 15 hours universal entitlement and the 30 hours extended offer. Across the week we offer 3 different sessions:

  • Monday and Tuesday 8:45 - 15:00 and Wednesday morning 8:45 - 11:45 (15 hours)

  • Wednesday afternoon 12:15 - 15:00 and Thursday and Friday 8:45 - 15:00 (15 hours)

  • Five days a week (Monday to Friday) 8:45 - 15:00 (30 hours)

Marden Lodge Nursery has the children at it's heart, promoting curiosity and a love of learning through a child-led approach. We encourage the children to follow their own interests whilst supporting them on their unique journey through the Early Years. With a free-flow Nursery environment and access to the garden all day every day (whatever the weather!) the children take centre stage.

As part of a wider school community the children also have opportunities to explore Forest School weekly, visit areas such as the library and take part in whole school events. Not only does this introduce the children to their valued role within a community, it also supports them with their transition into Reception. With an experienced team, a qualified teacher and strong relationships with our Nursery families, the children leave us school-ready!

New for 2021, we will be moving to a new on-site setting, previously the Children's Centre. It is currently undergoing a refurbishment and will be ready to go for September 2021 - after a lick of paint and more! We are so excited to be transitioning. With an on-site kitchen (lots of baking and cooking our future!), a large outdoor garden and open plan classroom - it is going to be an exciting new chapter for the Marden Lodge community.

To apply for a place for September 2021, please visit http://www.mardenlodge.org/331/nursery-admissions or call our school office on 01883 343 014

Wellbeing- Action for Happiness

This month Action for Happiness are encouraging everyone to get active, get outdoors and take care of your body! Let's reap the benefits of getting our bodies moving and breathing more deeply as a result of exercising, laughing and even singing! We don't all need to run marathons - there are simple things we can all do to take care of our bodies - for example unplugging from technology, getting outside and - importantly - making sure we get enough sleep!

Try this out over the Easter break.

Annual Parent Survey:

One more day to send us your feedback

It is the time of year again when we seek feedback from all of our stakeholders: children, staff and parents. We need to hear from you what is going well and what we need to improve as your views are central to our school improvement process. The School Leadership Team are relentless in the drive for school improvement and this survey will help us continue the process.

You may complete one survey per parent, per child, in your family. For example, 2 parents with 2 children could submit up to 4 individual surveys. The deadline for completion is the last day of term, Thursday, 1st April.

Thank you for your time and support.

Surrey Day children's competition

For this year’s Surrey Day, BBC Radio Surrey is looking for school children to sum up Surrey’s natural beauty in 60 seconds.

Children aged between 5 and 11, are asked to record a short audio file explaining what they love about Surrey's nature or the challenges faced in the local environment.

Maybe it’s the beauty that's been discovered during lockdown on a local walk or maybe it will be about birds or wildlife.

Entries can be presented as a self-authored piece or as a mini news report.

Primary school children can enter between the ages of 5 and 11.

There are two trophies and two one-year family passes for the Surrey Wildlife Centre for the overall winners in each of our age ranges: 5-8 years old, 9-11 years old. There is also an Adopt a Hedgehog Gift pack for the 5-8 year-olds and an Adopt an Otter Gift Pack for the 9-11 year-olds, from the Surrey Wildlife Trust.

They’ll be two runners up in each category, who will each receive a certificate.

When the entry is recorded, parents or guardians are asked to email them across as an mp3, including the name and age of the child and a contact telephone number.

Entries will be open from Midnight Monday, 22 March 2021 to Midnight on Friday, 16 April 2021.

The email address for entries is surreyday@bbc.co.uk

The winners will be announced on Surrey Day, on Saturday, 1 May 2021.

Only one entry per person please and children must be aged between 5 – 11 years old on the closing date of Friday, 16 April 2021 to enter this competition.

The winning entries will be played on BBC Radio Surrey.

Digital safeguarding research survey

Surrey County Council is supporting research that is being undertaken by Praesidio Safeguarding (on behalf of the Government), to understand the impact of legal and policy changes coming into force over the next year that will require internet-based services such as gaming and social media sites to establish the age of their child users with a greater degree of confidence. They have asked us to share the surveys below, which aim to gather the thoughts and feelings of young people and their parents/carers on different methods that can be used to establish children’s ages online. The research is aimed at finding out if any of the suggested methods pose a risk of exclusion to children.

The information they are collecting from the survey will be anonymous and will help the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to establish the most appropriate ways to help protect young people online.

Please share your thoughts and feelings by clicking on either the ‘Child’ or ‘Parents’ survey link below.

For more information contact; info@praesidiosafeguarding.co.uk

The closing date for the surveys is Tuesday, 6 April 2021.

Free online Level 2 Accredited Training for parents: information from theaimgroup.co.uk/

Due to Government Funding in the Adult Education Budget. We have several Free online Level 2 Accredited (OFSTED, NCFE, CACHE) Qualifications available for Parents to help better understand some key issues around young people's mental health and wellbeing.

We currently have the following subjects available, along with others which the school may suggest:

  • Caring for Children & Young People - Introduction to adverse childhood experiences. Exploring childhood and family structure. Developing strategies to improve outcomes for children affected by adverse childhood experiences.

  • Understanding Autism (Learn how individuals process sensory information, understand characteristics, understand conditions, learn how speech, language and communication differ in people with Autism)

  • Understanding Behaviour That Challenges (Supporting positive behaviour, effective communication & how to manage challenging behaviour)

  • Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties (Understand characteristics of ADHD, ADD, Dyslexia & Dyscalculia, the importance of early diagnosis, assessment methods available to diagnose learning difficulties)

  • Children & Young People's Mental Health - Exploring mental health and understanding how to support individuals with mental ill-health. Developing skills to form a mentally safe environment.

On average the courses take between 15-30 hours to complete within a 6-week window and are completed on a laptop or computer at the learner's home. No Exams, endpoint assessments are involved, the courses are purely Q&A based and are available to you 24/7. You can do as many as you like, however, you can just do one at a time.

The only criteria the learner must meet to be eligible is the following..

  • Aged 19 or over on or before 31st August 2020

  • Have lived in the UK/EU for 3+ years

  • Not already on a Government-funded course (Apprenticeship for example)

The course is completely free, but the learning provider reserves the right to charge a fee if there has been no attempt made in completing the course as this is deemed to be wasting government funding. However, the college always grants extensions if the learner has attempted the course and has a reason as to why they won't be able to complete it.

If you are interested in undertaking one of these free online courses, then please complete the following link below as soon as possible. This will then allow me to contact you and send over the relevant Enrolment details and of course, answer any questions you may have!
