A sinking fund is a voter approved "pay as you go" plan giving our school district the money we need to cover repairs and upgrades without having to borrow or take loans. This helps us save money because we don't have to pay extra in loan interest. These funds can be used for anticipated and unanticipated building and site repairs.
All monies collected are utilized to directly benefit the district. No bonds are sold and there are no interest expenses.
Can be used for the continual upkeep of school buildings, facilities, and surrounding school sites (i.e. security, technology, parking lots, playgrounds, etc.)
Sinking funds cannot be used to pay for salaries, textbooks, loose furnishings/equipment, operational costs (other than building repairs) or school buses.
It's important to note that sinking fund millages are usually set for a specific period, often 10 years, and they may be subject to renewal through another vote after the set period.

Why are band facilities and equipment a higher priority than school security improvements (i.e. fencing and door sensors, etc.)? -and-
The band facility and the athletic complex are more complex from a design/planning and cost perspective and are more appropriate for a bond referendum. In tandem, the other identified things like fencing, door sensors, and roofing are also being addressed in the future through the Sinking Fund dollars and based upon current and expected future condition. The security of the building is consistently being updated and added to for enhanced security. The newly installed Night Lock system on every classroom door, added security to restrict access in each entry way, reduced visibility of visitors inside the hallways and doors, new and replaced security cameras, a security assessment and critical mapping were all done within the last 12 months. The sinking fund will help cover the costs of the additional and ongoing upgrades/replacements as things need to be done over the next 10 years.
