Tower Bridge - Victorian Urban Planners
We visited Tower Bridge and walked across the high walkway. We even stood on the glass floor and looked down at the cars and boats below us! We had amazing views of East and West London and saw the River Thames flowing through the city.
We explored the engine room and learned how the bridge was built and why it was important in Victorian London. It was a fun and interesting trip!
Bone Detectives: Discovering Our Skeletons!
This week, Year 3 explored the amazing human skeleton! The class learned that our bodies have 206 bones that help us move, grow, and protect our organs.
Students identified major bones like the skull, spine, ribs, and femur and even built their own model skeletons. They discovered how bones protect vital organs, like the ribcage shielding the heart and lungs.
It was a fun, hands-on week full of curiosity, questions, and learning about how our bodies are built to move and stay strong!
Express Yourself!
We ended Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week by giving the children a special opportunity to express themselves by coming into school wearing non-uniform. This was a wonderful way for the children to celebrate their individuality and show who they are through their clothing choices. It was lovely to see such a range of colours, styles, and big smiles throughout the day!
Visit to the London Museum of Docklands
Year 3 had a wonderful trip to the London Museum of Docklands, where we explored London’s history as a busy port city. In Sailortown, we stepped back in time, walking through old streets and discovering what life was like for sailors and dock workers. The sights and sounds made it feel very real! We also visited the First Port of the Empire and Warehouse of the World galleries, where we learned how London became a major trading port. We discovered how goods like tea, sugar and spices travelled from around the world to the docks.
Science and nutrition
In Science this term, Year 3 have been learning about nutrition and how to make healthy choices. We explored different pizza toppings and talked about which food groups they belong to. The children learned that vegetables give us vitamins, protein helps our muscles grow, and carbohydrates give us energy. We discussed how choosing more vegetables and not too much cheese or processed meat can make a pizza healthier. Year 3 did a fantastic job thinking carefully about their food choices!
Children’s Mental Health Week
We have been learning about Children’s Mental Health Week. We talked about how important it is to look after our minds, just like we look after our bodies. We discussed different feelings and how everyone feels happy, sad, worried or excited at different times. We learned that all feelings are normal and it is okay to talk about them. Sharing our feelings can help us feel better. We thought about ways to keep our minds healthy. Some of us said we feel calm when we draw, read or play outside. Others said talking to a friend or a trusted adult helps when we feel worried. We also practised taking slow, deep breaths to help us relax.
Reading The Iron Man
In Year 3 we have been reading The Iron Man. The story is exciting and a little bit mysterious. We have been thinking about what the Iron Man looks like and how the characters might be feeling.
We have enjoyed doing role play to help us understand the story better. Some of us acted as the Iron Man, moving slowly and heavily like a giant metal robot. Others pretended to be Hogarth or the farmers. Acting out the scenes helped us imagine what was happening and made the story come alive.
We have also been answering questions about the book. We looked for clues in the text to help us. We practised explaining our answers in full sentences and using evidence from the story. This is helping us to become better readers.
Music Around the World
We have listened to music from different countries and talked about how it sounds. Some music was fast and exciting, and some was slow and calm. We have been learning about beats and tempo. The beat is the steady pulse in music, like a ticking clock. The tempo tells us how fast or slow the music is. We practised clapping and tapping different beats. Sometimes we had to play very fast, and sometimes we had to slow down and stay together. We have also been learning leadership skills. Each week, some children have had a turn to lead the class. The leader chooses the tempo and helps everyone keep the beat.
Amazing Africa Home Learning Projects
Our class has been learning all about Amazing Africa, and the children have done some incredible home learning projects! From colourful posters and fact files to 3D models and creative artwork, every project showed how much effort and imagination went into it.
We learned about African animals, countries, cultures, and traditions through the children’s work. Well done to all the children and adults at home for helping make these projects so amazing!
Bar Modelling in December
This December, our class has been busy practising bar modelling in maths! We’ve been using bar models to solve addition, subtraction, and word problems, which helps us see the numbers clearly and understand how to work them out step by step.
Everyone has been trying really hard and improving every day. It’s great to see how bar modelling makes tricky problems easier and more fun!
STONE AGE ART
This week, our class had an exciting art lesson using stones and natural paints! We made our own paints from charcoal and iron oxide and used sticks to paint a stone-age hunting scene on the stones.
It was messy but so much fun! We experimented with colors and textures, and everyone’s stones looked amazing and unique. It felt great to make art using materials from nature.
The Premier League Trophy Visits Our School!
We had an exciting day- the Premier League trophy came to our school! In assembly, we learned about the Premier League values: teamwork, respect, fair play, enjoyment, and trying our best.
We talked about how to use these values in school, like working together, listening to others, and being fair on the playground. Everyone loved seeing the shiny trophy up close- it was a day to remember!
Children in Need
Year 3 had a fantastic day supporting Children in Need! Today we came to school dressed in our cosiest pyjamas to help raise money for this brilliant charity. The classroom was filled with fluffy slippers, colourful onesies, and lots of big smiles! We talked about why Children in Need is so important and how the money raised helps support children and families across the UK. The children showed great kindness and enthusiasm, and we are very proud of how willing they were to take part and contribute.
A huge thank you to all families for your generous donations. Together, we’ve helped make a real difference. Well done, Year 3—kindness looks good on you!
Museum of London, all about the Stone Age!
Year 3 had an exciting online lesson this week with the Museum of London, all about the Stone Age! The children were introduced to the fascinating world of archaeology and discovered how archaeologists investigate the past by studying objects left behind. They learned about real historical finds from East London, exploring what these items can tell us about how Stone Age people lived, worked, and survived.
Through photographs, videos, and expert explanations from the museum team, the children saw tools, pottery, animal bones, and other artefacts. They discussed what each find might have been used for and what it reveals about early human life. The class were brilliant historians—asking thoughtful questions and making great connections to what we’ve been learning in school. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring the Stone Age to life and understand how evidence from our local area helps us piece together the past.
This week in Year 3, we have been learning all about Anti-Bullying Week. The children took part in discussions about what bullying is, how it can make people feel, and—most importantly—what they can do if they or someone else needs help.
A big focus this year was online safety. We talked about how to stay safe when using the internet, including keeping personal information private, being kind in online spaces, and telling a trusted adult if something doesn’t feel right.
To finish the week, the children created some fantastic anti-bullying posters. They included positive messages, bright illustrations, and reminders about being kind both in person and online. We were really impressed with how thoughtful and creative they were! Year 3 showed maturity and kindness throughout the week—well done, everyone!
In maths this week, we’ve started our new unit on multiplication. The children have been exploring the concepts using lots of concrete materials such as counters, cubes, and arrays. They’ve also been practising pictorial methods to help them visualise their thinking. All of this supports our maths mastery approach, which focuses on building strong, secure understanding before moving on. The children have been really engaged and are already showing great confidence!
This week, Year 3 have been busy learning all about rocks in our science lessons! We have turned into real geologists –scientists who study rocks and how they are made. We started by looking closely at different types of rocks. We used magnifying glasses to spot tiny grains, layers, and even sparkly crystals. Some rocks were smooth and shiny, while others were rough and crumbly.
We learned that there are three main types of rocks:
Sedimentary – made from layers of sand and mud, sometimes with fossils inside.
Igneous – made from cooled lava or magma.
Metamorphic – rocks that have changed with heat and pressure.
Everyone had a chance to sort and describe the rocks, using words like hard, rough, shiny, and bumpy. We even pretended to be detectives, trying to work out where each rock might have come from! Our favourite part was discovering fossils in some of the sedimentary rocks – it felt like finding a secret from the past!
Celebrating 130 Years of Our School!
This week was a very special one — our school turned 130 years old! To celebrate, we travelled back in time to the Victorian era, when our school was first built.
We started the week with Victorian Day! Everyone dressed up in old-fashioned clothes and experienced what school might have been like 130 years ago. We practised our handwriting, learned about strict Victorian teachers, and even tried some traditional classroom activities. It really felt like we had stepped back in time!
Throughout the week, we explored the Victorian features of our school. We looked closely at the old bricks, tall windows, and even the original school bell tower. It was fascinating to see how much of our school’s history is still around today.
We also took part in a History Bee, testing our knowledge about the Victorians and our local area. Everyone showed great teamwork and enthusiasm as we shared what we had learned.
In our writing lessons, we wrote letters to a Victorian child, explaining what school is like now and how different it is. We all agreed that school today is much more fun — we’re very glad we don’t have to use ink pens or sit in silence all day!
Finally, on Friday, we finished our celebrations with a huge 130th birthday party! There were cakes, milkshakes, and even a silent disco. We danced, laughed, and celebrated being part of our school’s amazing history.
It was a fantastic week full of fun, learning, and celebration. Here’s to another 130 years of our wonderful school!
Songs from around the world
Year 3 have been learning songs from around the world. We’ve already sung songs from Africa and Bangladesh, and we’ve had so much fun!
In our African songs, we learned how music can be full of rhythm and energy. We clapped, drummed, and moved to the beat!
Our Bangladeshi songs were beautiful and calm. We enjoyed learning new words and hearing different instruments like the tabla and harmonium.
We’ve discovered that music is something everyone shares, no matter where they live. It’s been amazing to see how songs can bring people together from all over the world.
Show Racism the Red Card!
We took part in Show Racism the Red Card Day! Everyone came to school dressed in bright red clothes to show that we stand together against racism.
We learned that it’s important to be kind and fair to everyone, no matter what they look like or where they come from. We talked about how our differences make us special and how we can all help make our school a welcoming place for everyone.
Brilliant Base 10 Maths!
In Maths we have been learning how to add using base 10. We used base 10 blocks to help us understand how numbers are made up of tens and ones. The children had great fun building numbers with the blocks and then combining them to find the total. It really helped everyone see how carrying tens works when we add bigger numbers together. There were lots of “lightbulb moments” as pupils realised how base 10 makes adding much easier to understand. We’re becoming confident mathematicians — and we can’t wait to tackle our next challenge!
Horniman Museum
What an incredible day our Year 3 class had at the Horniman Museum! We took part in a fantastic workshop all about Africa, which helped us learn even more about our topic, Amazing Africa. During the workshop, we explored real African artefacts, listened to traditional music, and discovered how people in different parts of Africa live, work, and celebrate. The children were fascinated by the beautiful patterns, instruments, and stories shared during the session. Everyone showed brilliant curiosity and respect, asking thoughtful questions and sharing what they had learned back in class.
Amazing Africa
Year 3 had a taster day all about “Amazing Africa” — and it truly lived up to its name.
We started the day by exploring the map of Africa, discovering its many countries, languages, and cultures. The children were amazed to learn just how big the continent is and how different life can be from one country to another. We listened to some traditional African music and even tried out a few dance moves — there was lots of laughter and energy in the room! Later, we created colourful African-inspired art, using bright patterns and bold designs to decorate our classroom.
