Welcome to our Interactive Math Curriculum Guides!
The purpose of these guides is to help parents understand how math concepts are presented in our curriculum through informative videos and sample questions. Students may also use these guides for review and practice.
As you interact with these resources, please note the important tips below:
These resources are supplemental to any study guides, resources, and instruction provided by the teachers. All classwork, including any "unit review" study guides, take priority over these curriculum guides.
Students may use these resources independently, but the best way to utilize them is with an adult, allowing the student to explain their thinking for the selected problems.
The answers to some of the questions are not exceptionally difficult. The purpose of these guides is the review of the concept. Parents should not assume that if a student gets all of the answers correct on this resource, they are fully prepared to do well on the upcoming unit assessment.
Students and parents may view the correct answers after completing the quiz by clicking on "View Accuracy".
The resource is meant to be re-taken or re-visited as many times as needed. If your child is still struggling with a particular concept, watch the video again and discuss with them!

RECORDER and UKULELE CLUB
4th grade students are starting RECORDER CLUB! We'll meet during recess on Thursday each week. No sign-ups necessary! If you want to join, just be sure to have your recorder at school on Thursdays, and come on in to the music room to play some music together.
5th grade students are starting UKULELE CLUB! We'll meet before school on Friday each week from 8:00 - 8:20. Just like recorder club, no sign-ups necessary! If you want to join, just come on in to the music room before school on Fridays to play some music together.
All Anna Mac Music students will be moving on from instruments in January, and beginning a Musical Theatre unit. We'll be working on exploring our vocal registers and expressing different feelings and moods while singing, using movement to express emotions and communicate a storyline, and discussing the technical side of musical theatre as well - sound amplification, lighting, props, costumes, sets, etc...
The 3rd graders will focus on Annie
4th graders will focus on "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"
5th graders will focus on "Matilda"
Thank you to all of the families who joined us at the Manhattan Public Library to celebrate the culmination of 5th graders' coral reef unit! Their video, 3D printed reefs, mural, and all of the other coral themed activities made for a fantastic evening.

Anna McDonald Music Info.
Anna Mac music students are preparing to go caroling around the school on the last week of classes. We will be spreading Holiday cheer to our school with some traditional and non-traditional Winter carols. 3rd graders will be singing as well as playing glockenspiel percussion instruments, 4th graders will be singing and playing their recorders, and 5th graders will be singing and playing ukuleles. Ask your students which songs they chose, and be sure to remind them to dress festively for their last music class before Winter break!
Choir will be performing Christmas carols at the Manhattan Park District's Round Barn Christmas Festival on Friday, December 1st. They will be the first group to perform that night, starting at 6:00, then the Junior High's choir will take the stage, followed by the Canterbury Carolers, a Library Stroy, and finally a "Grinch Dance Party"! Come join us for this fun, festive event!
Choir is also happy to announce that I've sent in nominations for some of our 5th grade members to join other elementary choir students from around the State at this year's Illinois Music Educator's Association's All-State Festival! It will be on January 28th, and take place in Peoria. Say congratulations to Addison Cooke, Kaylie Chmura, Alice Harvey, Carly Connelly, Emilie Olszewski, Blaise Rose, Alyssa Marzec, Winter Reddicks, Kailey McGraw, and Mira Joseph! (These students were all nominated, but not all me be selected by the ILMEA organization, depending on All-State choir numbers).
5th Grade Band Info:
5th grade band:
Now that the Holiday break is quickly approaching, 5th grade band members are reminded to keep practicing 20 minutes a day! The more you practice over the Holiday break, the better and more prepared you will be to learn new notes and rhythms when we return after the break!
Also, any student who practices 20 minutes a day will receive an extra raffle ticket PER DAY practiced over the Holiday break! Be sure to practice!
Please contact Mrs. Pedziwater with any questions at cpedziwater@manhattan114.org.
#rd-5th Grade Gym Info:
Third, Fourth and Fifth Grade Parents! Just a reminder, when your child is absent, on a day they have PE, they must complete their makeup assignment. Their PE Assignment can be found on their iPad. They open Google Classroom, Click on the GREEN Physical Education Classroom (with the soccer ball). Once that is open, click on the word Classwork (at the bottom of their iPad). This will then take your child to their assignment. If there is a backpack with books, then your child does not have an assignment. If there is a BLUE circle/dot with the month and day your child was absent, then your child needs to complete the assignment. Students who complete the assignment (on time) will earn their 5 participation points. ASSIGNMENTS are DUE on the immediate SUNDAY that your child was absent. If your child was absent from PHYSICAL EDUCATION for two separate weeks, he/she will have 2 assignments to complete.
If you have any questions please email me at mrossi@manhattan114.org
Anna McDonald/Manhattan Public Library Info:
5th graders dedicated the first trimester to researching coral reefs and they have made some incredible products geared toward saving these amazing ecosystems! Families and friends are invited to help celebrate their students' accomplishments.
Please see the invitation for details.
Reminders:
Dress attire
What students wear to school is what they go outside to recess or PE in, regardless of time of year. As the weather gets colder, please dress your student appropriate for the real feel temps
Smart watches...to be used to tell time, not to communicate home with. Cell phones...powered down and kept in a backpack. Every classroom has a phone in the event of an emergency
Importance of Attendance
We will continue reviewing attendance and making it the first filter before determining academic intervention services. If a student is enrolled in intervention and isn't exhibiting good attendance, they may be dropped from services for a student with much better attendance
Students are reminded daily to make good choices, be kind, be a good friend, put a smile on their face, follow directions, and be at school for all the right reasons. This includes on the bus. Please reinforce these expectations with us. It has been a great year thus far. A real great year!
Finally, please follow a natural chain of progression if there are concerns, issues or questions. If the concern, issue or question is with a specific staff member or incident in which staff is present, address it with that staff member to get all the specifics
In closing, I want nothing more than for your student to have the best experience possible while attending Anna Mac. It has been a great year to this point and I expect it will only get better. Thank you for everything you do as parents & friends to support your student(s) and our staff. In November we will be heading to a movie; December is the 18th Annual Holiday Dodgeball Tourney; Pizza Party & Games in January; Bowling in February; Inflatable Obstacle Courses in April; and the Slammers game, PTO Field Day, & 18th Annual Kickball Tourney in May.
Ending our last year as a 3rd-5th grade building with a bang. Happy Holidays Anna Mac!

Late Arrivals
Students arriving (after 8:20) late to school will need to be signed in by their parent/guardian who is dropping them off. Please come inside the vestibule to sign your student in and to make sure you mark if they are having hot lunch.
Attendance and Truancy
All parents are required to call the school at 478-3310 if their child will be absent from school. The call should be made before 7:45 a.m. A parent or a legal guardian must report absences. Student reports will not be accepted. When calling, please state: date, parent name, student name and the reason for the absence. In the event you do not contact us, we will make a reasonable attempt to contact you at home or work. Failure to report a child's absence constitutes the child considered absent without a valid excuse.
Absent work can be requested on the second day of the student’s absence. If requesting work on the second day, please do so when reporting the absence. If a student will only be absent one day, the child can obtain make-up work the next day from his/her classroom teacher. Please refer to the parent/student handbook or call the main office if you have any questions.
NOTE: Illinois School Code 5/26-21 states: "A "truant" is defined as a child subject to compulsory school attendance and who is absent without valid cause from such attendance for a school day or portion thereof."
"Chronic or habitual truant" shall be defined as a child subject to compulsory school attendance and who is absent without valid cause from such attendance for 10% or more of the previous 180 regular attendance days." This equates to a child being absent more than 17 days during any given school year.
School Nurse Info.
All medications (prescription and OTC) MUST have a doctor’s order/medication authorization form (which can be found on our district website) brought into the nurse’s office at the time of dropping off any medication. The medication must be dropped off by the parent/guardian, NOT brought to school with the student. Please make sure the health office has the most up to date health action plans.
REPORTING INFECTIOUS DISEASES
The ability to control the spread of infectious diseases in school requires the assistance of our community members. If your child is diagnosed with an infectious disease, please report this information to the school nurse. Please notify your child’s school nurse if your healthcare provider diagnoses him/her with the following illnesses, as a doctor’s note may be needed for your child to return to school:
Strep throat/scarlet fever Pertussis
Head lice Measles
Pink eye/conjunctivitis Mumps
Fifth’s Disease Rubella
Rotavirus MRSA
Meningitis Polio Myelitis
Mono Scabies
Medication Reminder
If your child will need to take ANY medications at school this year please make sure to bring them in the original prescription bottles. A new medication permission form will need to be filled out for any medication. Children are not permitted to carry medication including cough drops. Cough drops and over-the-counter creams are considered medication! Students CANNOT carry medications to school. Also, remember to bring in an updated emergency action plan for any emergency medications. There are no "stock medications" in the office such as Tylenol, Motrin, Tums, etc. Medications
can only be sent for the student by the parent or guardian. Any and all medication needs to be in original containers and properly labeled.
All forms can be found on the Anna McDonald website at:
http://manhattan114.org/index.php/anna-mcdonald-school/immunization-compliance-information/
P.E.
We have made a change in protocol for students that are exempt from PE class due to injury or other circumstances. Moving forward, we are going to allow students to attend recess outside, HOWEVER, they are not permitted to participate in physical activity, which could do more harm and/or aggravate the injury or circumstance. This is simply allowing students to hang out on the black top area with friends near the recess supervisor and get some fresh air. We hope all of our students will take the opportunity to be mature and responsible with their own situation and circumstance and follow protocol. If it becomes a problem for a child to be responsible, Mr. McWilliams will address it on a case-by-case basis and possibly omit that student from going outside.
Students who miss PE, for any reason (illness, appointment, out of town, vacation, band, orchestra, etc.) will be assigned homework in GOOGLE Classroom. I will specifically only select those students who are absent on their PE days to complete their homework.
Each day a student comes to PE class, has their gym shoes on and tied, walks to their squad and sits quietly, they earn 5 points. Students who are absent on the day(s) they have PE will have the opportunity to earn those 5 points by completing the assignment. Students will have until the following Sunday to complete the assignment and submit it from Google Classroom.
There should be NO WORK on your part. The assignment can be completed in their homeroom class (if time allows).
Please make sure all of your students have joined the Physical Education Google Classroom. My access code is 2ruenes.
If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Car Riders/Walkers
Parents of Car Riders,
We ask that you not park on the North side of 2nd street in front of the school and walk your student through the car rider line to avoid the car rider line. If you prefer to park and pick your child up, please do so on another side street and use the cross walks on Eastern or Park Street. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
When picking up your child in front of school, please avoid blocking the crosswalk. Also, students should not load the car from the street side as cars are allowed to pass the cars parked in front. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe. Children walking, riding bicycles, and being dropped off by parents, are not to be on school grounds until after 8:00 a.m. Children are to follow the Rules-of-the-Road regarding bicycle safety. Extra care must be taken around the school due to the high volume of vehicular traffic. Children walking home are requested to use the sidewalks whenever possible. Students walking home on 2nd Street East of the school are to walk on the right side of the road.
When parking at Anna McDonald, please be mindful of resident property and parking in the designated areas across the street. Residents need to have access to their property at all times. Also, if you are lining up to drop your student off in the morning, please be kind and leave access to the staff parking spaces when possible. Thank you!
Communication With Staff
If you would like to get in touch with one of our staff please feel free to call school at 815-478-3310. If they are unavailable, we will gladly put you through to their voicemail. You can also email any of our staff. Email addresses are: first initial followed by last name@manhattan114.org. These email addresses can also be found on our website http://www.manhattan114.org. Please keep in mind that once the school day starts our teachers are very busy and may not have the opportunity to check their email or voicemail. They are very good about getting back to parents within 24 hours. If your concern is immediate and you need them to know something about your child for that school day, please call the office and talk to the secretary. If you have a concern about your child, we ask you first address that concern with the classroom teacher. They have greater first-hand knowledge about your child and can very often alleviate any concerns you might have. If for some reason you continue to have concerns, Mr. McWilliams would be glad to offer his help and support.

Dressing for the Weather
The classroom teachers will decide whether or not the students will go outdoors depending on weather conditions. Dress attire should be appropriate for the weather conditions. What students wear to school is what they will go outside in. Please dress your child for the weather..
Bus Transportation Info.
If you have questions or concerns about bus transportation, please contact Pam DeBoer pdeboer@manhattan114.org. If you have a daily change (pick up instead of bus), please send a note with your child or call your child’s school.
School Closing Info.
In addition to local radio, TV, and websites, our communication service will also be utilized to provide each family with information. If school is going to be closed prior to the start of the day, parents will receive an automated call, email, and/or text. If you have had a change in information, it is important that you call the school with these changes.
Never Stop Reading!!!
Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week; Student B reads only 4 minutes a night…or not at all!
Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week. Student A reads 20 minutes x 5 times a week = 100 min./week. Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 minutes.
Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month. Student A reads 400 minutes a month. Student B reads 80 minutes a month.
Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year. Student A reads 3600 minutes in a school year. Student B reads 720 minutes in a school year.
Student A practices reading the equivalent of ten whole school days a year. Student B gets the equivalent of only two school days of reading practice.
By the end of 6th grade if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits, Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days. Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days. One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance. How do you think Student B will feel about him/herself as a student?
Questions to Ponder...
Which student would you expect to read better?
Which student would you expect to know more?
Which student would you expect to write better?
Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary?
Which student would you expect to be more successful in school.…and in life?
Which student are you?

Band
Please keep encouraging your child to practice 20 minutes a day so they can improve on their instrument! I will be checking practice records every week at band and everyone who practices 20 minutes 5-6 days a week will be entered into a drawing for a prize!
Student Council
Anna McDonald's 5th graders elected their student council representatives earlier this month. We commend everyone who put time and effort into their campaigns and congratulate the elected winners! These students will work hard throughout the upcoming school year to improve their school, help their community, and hone their leadership skills.
