Bokashi composting with James and Kat

DUNCAN RD CREATIVE

Duncan Rd. Creative - Kat shared a post on Instagram: "I was really nervous when I first started using my bokashi system. I found out quickly that it was super easy to do and incredibly satisfying!  Read below to see how simple it is. If my boy can do it you can! You need: - two buckets (one with holes drilled in the bottom - two old paint buckets work perfectly) - a bucket lid - bokashi bran - a brick or a potato - When first starting a bucket, sprinkle bran on the bottom of your holey bucket. - Pour in your food scraps. All of them. Bokashi isn't fussy. Meat, citrus, onion skins. Anything. - Squash it down to get rid of any oxygen. Use a potato masher or a brick. - Add about a tablespoon of bran on top and seal the lid tightly making sure no oxygen can get in. - each time you do this you can collect the bokashi juice that is in the bottom bucket. It is an incredible fertiliser. Be sure to dilute it 1:100 bokashi juice to water for a soil drench or 1:500 for a foliar feed. - Just keep doing this process using your scraps until it's jammed to the top. Once it is sprinkle a palm full of bran on top.  Pop the lid on making sure it is closed properly and leave it alone. No peeking! - Take the top bucket off now and leave it somewhere shady for 2-4 weeks. Don't lift the lid as it let's oxygen in which you don't want. - When it is ready it will have a white fluffy mould on the top (sometimes this might not show up but if it smells like vinegar it has worked it's magic) and will smell like pickles! You can now pop it in your compost bin as an incredible compost activator. You can also dig your bokashi into the soil but make sure you mix it in with your soil well and don't plant anything on it for 2-3 months as it will burn the plant roots.
