Podcasts aren't just for adults! There are high-quality podcasts produced for, and in some cases by kids. Kids want to pursue their interests just like adults. Podcasts provide them with a chance to learn more about something they enjoy. Podcasts are a great way for kids to engage their other senses (without screens) and experience music, stories, science and news. For kids who struggle with reading, podcasts, like audiobooks, provide a new outlet. Finally, research shows that listening leads to better learning. A study conducted by the Audio Publishing Association showed that listening increases reading accuracy, improves comprehension and fluency and even increases motivation.
Check out a great range of recommended podcasts at our Kidcasts page.
The benefits of reading—even for a short time each day—are varied and life-changing, from improving employability, language skills, social skills, and family bonding, to reducing stress and anxiety.
We like to think we make reading for pleasure an easy task at MSS with a library collection full of great stories and high interest non-fiction. Over 8,ooo books or magazines to choose from!
You can read more about the importance of Reading for Pleasure in this Scottish Book Trust article.
Graphic Novels are good for your brain and your learning. The exaggerated facial expressions and consistent visual cues that make up the language of comics and graphic novels help train the brain to recognize when and how to utilize those empathy pathways. The great thing about graphic novels is the emotive response and connection between the reader and the novel. Graphic novels offer struggling readers different cues to a story. If a child comes across unknown vocabulary or a complicated narrative twist, the illustrations can provide contextual clues that can help the reader figure out the meaning of that passage.
Graphic Novels:
Improve visual literacy and vocabulary.
Inspire creativity.
Enhance social & emotional learning.
Help readers with learning challenges.
Give readers a better grasp on themes and topics.
Here are some articles about the benefits of graphic novels:
3 Ways Graphic Novels Benefit Reading Skills

The Kids' Lit Quiz is an annual literature quiz for students aged 10 - 13 years (Years 5-8)
This morning the Kids Lit Quiz team headed to the Feilding Civic Centre to compete against 39 teams of bibliophiles from Manawatū schools.
Faith Willis, Samantha Turner, Emma Couper, Katie Love had a fun morning pitting their book knowledge against the other Year 5-8 teams. Ella Christiansen as our reserve supported from the sidelines comparing answers with Whaea Sasha.
"Before we were actually getting asked the questions it was really nerve wracking and scary. However, after we'd been asked the 100 questions I was willing to do it again. It wasn't scary at all, I loved it! My favourite question was 'Which character from the Hunger Games didn't have a big role in the book but was an essential character in the movie'. - Katie Love. Did you know there were Yr 7 & 8 children competing with us!"

Over the past two weeks students in the Torotoro team have joined Whaea Sasha for library sessions to learn about AnyQuestions, a free online service to help students with inquiry based school work. Their librarians are online to help between 1pm-6pm weekdays.
How it works: AnyQuestions will work with any internet enabled device, such as a computer, tablet or a smartphone. AnyQuestions does look a bit different on different devices but you’re still talking to a librarian, somewhere in New Zealand
Who we are: AnyQuestions is funded by the Ministry of Education, managed by the National Library of New Zealand, and staffed by librarians from right around New Zealand.
Also check out Many Answers - Here students of all levels can search for answers to popular questions asked on AnyQuestions. Many Answers entries are not intended to give you the answer but rather guide you to websites and other resources that will help you find the information for yourself.

Today we had illustrator Sandra Morris and author Tom E Moffatt visiting us thanks to the Storylines Story Tour.
Torotoro students were entertained by Tom who as a writer of hilarious short stories and expert joke teller had us belly laughing all over the place.
Students with a specific interest in drawing were enthralled by the places from all over the world that nature journaling has taken Sandra Morris, and learning that if we take a moment to watch nature in action around us we can give it a go too, then she showed us how to draw a crocodile from just a few shapes.

Book promotion is a huge part of how we build our reading culture at MSS.
The Books n Bickies spent their lunchtime club time last Wednesday displaying all our ANZAC themed books and made some eye-catching poppies to help us commemorate ANZAC Day.
ANZAC Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that is observed every 25th of April (which was the first landing of the ANZACs at Gallipoli in 1915) broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served".

Graphic novels are increasingly becoming popular as a reading format here at MSS.
Did you know that:
Graphic novels are captivating reads that can offer exciting, funny, complex stories teaching readers inference, demonstrate punctuation and grammar rules, and develop their visual literacy.
Graphic novels also help build empathy as readers can learn about emotions by observing the images on the page as they read the story.
We have over 200 graphic novels in our collection with approximately 70% issued at all times.
Pop in and check them out.

Did you know that the National Library of New Zealand Services to Schools supplies schools with books to support classroom learning and to supplement reading for pleasure collections?
We request topic/inquiry loans every term and receive a collection of approximately 300 books that we divide up and are used by every class at MSS. We also request a Reading Engagement loan of an extra 100 books that we use to excite reading for pleasure. Some of these are added to classroom collections and others we display in our library for students to issue.
This is a great way to have fresh recently published books in our library every term for just the postage cost of sending the books back. CHECK OUT the National Library section in our library next time you visit!

Check out our range of picture books and information texts on Bees.

7 May 2020 - Introducing our MSS Head Librarians
My name is Jakob, and I'm one of three head librarians at school. I have a short but sweet book review to share with all of you. The book I am sharing with you today is called Dog Breed Guide by National Geographic. It has profiles of over 350 breeds of dogs, including the New Zealand Huntaway. It's so good, I might even ask Ms Bennitt to get it for our school library because I think everyone will love it! I give it 10/10.
Ashley is one of 2020 leaders and one of the three head librarians. Ashley enjoys reading a variety of books and loves her role as MSS head librarian. She is looking forward to getting back into the library and into her role.
Ashley is currently enjoying graphic novels. Here is her review of her latest read:
GHOSTS by Raina telgemeier - It's about a girl who has cystic fibrosis. And her big sister Cat lets her go see ghosts and the ghosts surround her and she has to go to hospital and get a breathing tube. And then November first comes around. And where they live it means that they go have a big celebration of the ghosts and it makes them feel welcome into the town but Mayas is not allowed to go because of her breathing tube. But when Cat goes she realises that they are nice and friendly and she's not scared of them any more.
My name is Camryn. I am one of your Head Librarians.
I am currently reading Tom Gates 'Extra special Treats-not!' I like the Tom Gates series, they're quite funny books. I am also part of MSS' Books 'n Bickies group. I also like reading humorous books. I enjoyed the Andy Griffith Treehouse series. My treehouse would have an entire gaming room, a room full of pets, a chocolate factory and an amazing library!
