Strikes All Around: MHS Bowling League Begins
The Mancelona High School bowling league has been around for quite some time now and it’s about time people are informed of the league. Several new students have joined the league this year, opening a bright new opportunity for both students and the sport. The team participates in several meets this year with our trained bowlers.
Not only do they participate in several meets but also several fundraisers to gain the proper equipment needed for their team. Teammates are required to attend at least one fundraiser throughout the season to support their team and sport. 50/50 raffles and bowling tournaments are their main and most popular fundraisers. So far, the team has raised a significant amount of roughly $300 from these fundraisers and plans to make even more from our community’s help.
We interviewed a several-year bowler, Hailey Kauffman, to see how she views the sport and her team this year compared to last. “We have more kids this year and something enjoyable is being able to have fun in a sport, it doesn't matter if you’re good at it”. The Mancelona bowling team is a community space for students to enjoy competition and have fun without the pressure of highly competitive sports. “There are more members this year compared to last, there is also a boys’ team and a girls' team”, Hailey said. This gives more kids an opportunity to participate in a sport they enjoy. She believes that our community staying informed helps students and parents know of accessible after-school activities for them to enjoy.
Knowing your community sports is interesting and helpful to the team and the sport. So far, our win-to-lose ratio isn’t the best but with plenty more practice and hard work, our teams will make a comeback. “Boys this year have lost 2 of 2 games and girls have lost 1 out of 2 games so far” states Hailey. Our teams aren't completely worried about just winning though, they enjoy competing and that's a large portion of the reason they play. Not everything is about winning. If you do not have the passion, a win may just mean nothing to you and others.
Our bowling league has come a long way from the start and has a successful and bright future ahead of them. With our support, they will make it a long way and can participate in a sport they enjoy. Look out for the bowling team at their next meet today in the Grayling's home area at 5 P.M.
