The Solar Eclipse

Last week, on Monday, everyone got to experience the near total solar eclipse that happened. The Mancelona elementary celebrated the eclipse by having our parent-teacher group provide the whole school with COSMIC brownies and capri Suns. They watched an educational video about a solar eclipse. Then the whole school went outside on the playground to watch the eclipse with their school-provided eclipse glasses.

Mrs. Morris said “The cool part is we taught about eclipses and space earlier in the year.”  She also said “It was a fun experience for us all.”

Mancelona High School celebrated the eclipse by going outside, during the last hour of the day, and watching it with the eclipse glasses. Mancelona Middle School did not get to look at the eclipse, sadly.

The sun is very bright during an eclipse and could easily damage your eyes, it is mostly temporary but long exposure without the approved glasses can cause permanent damage. So don't look at it without the special glasses. - Author:(Tamia Brown)

        Mancelona Elementary School Spirit Week

The Snowcoming dance at the high school was a week ago and with it came a spirit week. Where the high, middle, and elementary schools make different themes for every day of the week and dress up with those themes in mind.

The elementary school spirit week started on February 19th and ended on the 23rd. The themes for the elementary spirit week were Monday: no school, Tuesday: jersey/ sports day, Wednesday: Hawaiian/ tropical day, Thursday: country vs. country club, Friday: black and orange.

I interviewed a couple of the elementary staff members to see how they felt about the spirit week. Some of the questions I asked were about their favorite theme, do they like it when there are spirit weeks, and if there are any exciting projects their class is doing.

Third-grade teacher, Mary Morris, at the elementary said “My favorite theme was Hawaiian.  It was fun to see kids dressed up… Yes, I think it's fun to have spirit week so the kids get excited about dressing up...On Thursday, the half-day each class is doing a stem activity to get the kids excited to be here on the half-day.”

The art teacher, Mrs. Wilcox, had her students draw a Hawaiian scene on Wednesday, February 20th. (see below)

While this is just about the elementary’s spirit week, both of the other schools also celebrated the high school dance. Tell me, how would you want your school to celebrate a dance? - Author:(Tamia Brown)

The third graders at Mancelona Elementary made these, they are posted in the lobby.
