Phase 1 NZ Maths Curriculum: Rational Numbers

find a unit fraction of a whole number (e.g., 1/3 of 15, and identify the whole set or amount when given a unit fraction (e.g. 1/4 of the set is 3, what is the whole set?)

Phase 2 NZ Maths Curriculum: Rational Numbers

find a unit fraction of a whole number, using multiplication or division facts and where the answer is a whole number (e.g., 1/5 of 40).

Reflection:

Although I often feel less confident with Scratch Jnr, preparing and experimenting beforehand helped me see its value. The platform proved highly engaging, provided strong buy-in from students, and allowed those with coding strengths to shine. Debugging was a key learning, building resilience and problem-solving skills through trial and error. The lesson’s success was underpinned by prior learning in multiplication, division, and fractions, which gave students the foundation they needed. Differentiation was also a strength, with students able to work at their own level by choosing simpler or more complex fractions, ensuring everyone experienced success.

Creating a Fraction Machine
