Direct Instruction
One of the learning intentions for this lesson was to make meaning from a text, Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr Seuss. The second learning intention was to work collaboratively towards a shared project.
The video shows students working collaboratively on creating the Storyboard for their Manaiakalani Film Festival movie.
Reflection
This collaborative storyboard activity was a really effective learning experience. The students worked really well together and there were many opportunities to talk to students about the way they respond and talk to others to get the best out of each other. Unfortunately, a lot of this was missed on camera. By the time I turned the camera on for this lesson, the explicit teacher instructions had passed and many of the other groups had completed their portions of the storyboard.
Things to note
It was interesting watching the dynamics between mixed groups of Year 5s and 6s in this task. In the small group working at the table in the movie, it is quite clear that two of the students are being a lot more vocal than the other two. It was really positive to see the two vocal students being aware of including the other two (younger) students and ensuring they felt included and like their could have input.
