Direct Instruction: Digital Tapa

Students are using a grid in drawings to create a digital piece of Tapa or Siapo Cloth

Reflection: Initially I wanted student to 'do it my way', but with may of my class being very accurate with creating using the poly line they wanted to do it 'their way'. I realised I can teach them new skills it is up to them to chose to use them, especially when they come out with awesome flower patterns that look very real.

Things to note: Be careful modelling on the master, as students will be able to use this if they make a copy after the modelling session, (however can be useful for students who start late or have been absent. As you can see in the first image below where I have not added colour the boxes are still transparent and pick up the colour of the site background or blog background.

Tapa/Siapo Designs

Digital Tapa/Siapo

We are learning to use digital tools to create a story/design for a tapa cloth.

Instructions:

Prior to starting look at various island patterns and their meaning, On maths paper draw 18x18 square and break it up into 9 squares of 6x6. Practise 9 different designs and pick two for final design.

Students copy the drawing template with grid, (make sure the drawing is still bigger than the grid).

Breaking the main grid into 9 square each 6x6 smaller squares.

Create the digital design using the squares on the grid to recreate the pattern in their practise design.

Using individual squares to create patterns - paint tool and gradient option to get diagonal lines. You students can use curve line to create leaves. Or the poly line to create more detailed patterns.
