Direct Instruction

The learning intention for this lesson was for the students to use the evidence from the text/ image to make an inference. First the class watched a Youtube clip explaining what an inference is and we unpacked the word. This video starts with us making inferences s a class using an image, before splitting up into small groups to make inferences based upon a text. Once the students had applied this skill to a range of texts and images, they had to create their own image that required their audience to infer its deeper meaning.

Reflection

I felt that I planned this lesson sequence well, with engaging materials, but that my direct instruction was not as strong in this lesson. We had had a number of disruptions and children being called out while filming the start of this lesson and I can see myself trying to speed the process up instead of taking the time to facilitate the conversation. I definitely did too much of the talking at first!

Things to note

I wanted to capture the learn create share cycle more in this film; the students first learnt the skill as a class and practiced it with their reading group, before creating their own image that contains a deeper meaning and sharing it on their blogs. However, it was quite difficult to capture this succinctly - this process occurs over several hours throughout the course of the week.
