Original Civic Research & Action (OCRA) is a 4-year program at MHS that helps students become civic entrepreneurs by guiding them as they identify needs in their community and implement community-based civic action projects.
Original Civic Research & Action (OCRA) is a 4-year program at MHS that helps students become civic entrepreneurs by guiding them as they identify needs in their community and implement community-based civic action projects.
Students learn about the roles and responsibilities of locally elected leaders and important officials, governmental processes and institutions, and important policies of the tri-municipal town.
Student groups develop civic action plans based on research from collecting and analyzing quantitative data. This work is grounded in students’ own interests and passions with the goal of improving the community.
Students work with locally elected officials, town employees, non-profits, local stakeholders, and community based experts. Each group meets regularly with a community mentor to further their outreach and success outside of the classroom.
During the final years of high school, students implement thier civic action plans. They lobby for change by presenting their work at public forums, conferences and in meetings with elected officials.
