Kia ora whānau,
My name is Amie Williams and I'll be supporting your child in their Digital Technology Learning in Ruaumoko at Makaraka School.
I work for our local Connext Trust, who have employed me to provide the Manaiakalani Programme Outreach in our area. There are four of us facilitators here in Gisborne, working in 14 different schools.
I teach our kids and teachers how to be Cybersmart and how to use technology purposefully for learning. With your children, we have started learning to use our iPads for simple learning in the classroom. We can now take photos to show our learning. eg I found five green things in our classroom.
I also teach them about making smart decisions online through the use of their class blog. You can find their blog by clicking here:
My work with learners is around two platforms: Google Sites and Blogger. I'll explain these below.
This website you are on now is a Google Site. The 2020 Ruaumoko Google Site is a place where your child can go to find some of their learning.
I will add information to the site about Cybersmart learning.
I will help your child's teacher to add learning to the site for other areas of learning eg reading, writing, maths throughout the year.
This will be a slow process so our kids can learn and remember the important things, but not overwhelm them.
Blogger is a platform that words well with the other Google Tools we use at school.
It helps us model as teachers and facilitators, what is private vs public information and how to share our learning in ways that are "smart" in this online space.
It is our aim that students who learn from an early age how to navigate a digital world thoughtfully will be better prepared to be wonderful digital citizens for the rest of their lives.
