Theme: The Expanding Frontiers of Knowledge
What is important is to accept that the discovery of the truth is a great good in itself, and that the only real remedy for the evil consequences, whether of ignorance or of knowledge, is more knowledge: clearer understanding of what is involved, of what is worth pursuing, of means and ends, consequences and their value.’ (Berlin:1998)
Equinox 2022 looks at the question of how the frontiers of knowledge in natural and social sciences are being shaped in relation to existential questions of life itself. It explores the paradigm shifts in the quest of knowledge. Underlying this question is the understanding that the pursuit of knowledge has value in itself. The legitimacy of this pursuit comes from the sense of wonder and curiosity to know. This sense deepens the search. The deepening of the search extends frontiers by revisiting issues that have been debated for years; by addressing new questions that emerge from different social contexts and by exploring the conditions that make life and living possible.
Multidisciplinary work within, as well as across, social and natural sciences is creating knowledge to overcome the fragmentation of super-specialization with holistic perspectives that looks at living interconnections between man and nature. Nature is increasingly being included in the equation of the well being of mankind. The anthropogenic approach to understand nature is being questioned. There are efforts underway in both the sciences to include life experiences, the voices and language of people marginalized either economically or politically or socially or intellectually or all of these. New knowledge is being generated for revitalization of people and landscapes suffering from increasing violence, lifestyle diseases, pandemics, indebtedness, climate change, deforestation, scarcity of potable water, of land, of habitat, to name a few.
What are these new frontiers? What is the nature of this knowledge? Are interdisciplinary forums inclusive of marginalized people and worldviews? Do these modes of inclusion critique super-specialization and uphold holism? Is the pursuit of knowledge only for utilitarian purposes? Or, is it a mode of being in the world?
