What is Humanities?
Humanities is the study of humans and what it is to be human. Humanities help us understand and appreciate human history, culture, values, and beliefs. Within Humanities: Mātauranga pūkenga tangata, we aim to approach a range of concepts surrounding the influence, development, and changes that occur within different societies.
About Our Department
At Mairehau High School our Humanities department consists of Junior Humanities at Year 9 and 10, and separating into History, Geography, Media Studies, and Tourism in the senior levels.
Within the Junior Humanities courses a thematic approach is taken, where our units of work follow an overarching concept that is then guided by our ākonga (students) interests. This approach allows all kaiako (teachers) within the department to cater to the needs of the ākonga in front of them, as well as encouraging and presenting opportunities for deeper thinking and questioning of content presented.
Senior Humanities subjects cater for the needs of our ākonga through the designing courses that allow for NCEA recognition, as well as developing a range of academic and social skills in the process.
