Shift Art Exhibition 2023 Christchurch Museum

Year 12 and 13 Art and Photography students and a group of junior GaTe students attended the Shift Art Exhibition at the Christchurch Museum on Tuesday the 28th of March.

The purpose of the activity was to give students an experience of viewing global street art in a unique and large-scale environment.

The Christchurch Museum is going through a redevelopment and is currently empty. Empty, that is, except for the urban artists: hardy souls who have braved the cracks, the leaks, the ghosts of long-dead taxidermists to paint, project, paste-up, to shift this venerable institutioninto something colourful, something new.

Students explored the winding path that the streets artists created – it was a journey through five floors of urban art with surprises around every corner. Art on the walls, art on the ceilings, art in the galleries, the corridors, the offices, the storerooms. Art that engages with the Museum and the taonga it cares for, art that showcases urban art’s evolution andchallenges our ideas of what a Museum can be.”

Vincent Van Gogh Exhibition

On Wednesday the 15th of March Miss Marshall and Miss Glass took a group of students to the Vincent Van Gogh Alive Exhibition. This was an experiential learning for all students to be able to view the work of Vincent Van Gogh in a contemporary and digital form.

.About Van Gogh Alive

This exhibition was a multi-sensory experience. Van Gogh’s works have been displayed and enjoyed around the world for over a century – but never like this. This was no ordinary art exhibition. Created by Grande Experiences, Van Gogh Alive sets aside traditions of tiptoeing through silent galleries and viewing paintings from afar in quiet contemplation as visitors find themselves interacting with art in ways they never imagined. From start to finish, students were surrounded by a vibrant symphony of light, colour, sound and fragrance that has been called an ‘unforgettable’ multi-sensory experience. Van Gogh's masterpieces come to life, giving the sensation of walking right into his paintings, a feeling that is simultaneously enchanting, entertaining and educational. It was on a super-scale, viewing artworks from new angles and discovering unique perspectives, all contact-free and naturally socially distanced. But for many students, the greatest pleasure was being able to sit in and take in the experience, indulging the senses as waves of sights and sounds, intense and beautiful, wash over them.

Students sat for ages watching the screens, listening to music and reading the story of Vincent Van Gogh. This was a unique experience for them and showed Art in a new light.

WEARABLE ART

In 2021 Year 10 student Debra Li entered in the World of Wearable Art as part of Show quest.

Toi is a collaboration with World of WearableArt (WOW). Toi is the maori word for art.

Students could work solo or in groups of up to five people to make one garment then showcase and exhibit the garment at the Showquest regional event. Students had their designs professionally photographed and were judged on the day before the runway walk at the end of Showquest. The event was full day for the students and staff from 10am til 10 pm

Students were given 4 briefs which they could choose from. The first one was “Aotearoa”, Second one was “Futuristic”, Third was “excessive accessories” and Forth was open. For the open category students could submit any design they wanted.

Debra entered the Futuristic theme based on a female warrior in the future called 'Eldritch Knight' Rachel Sharp was her model for the day

Debra was awarded 'Best Garment Construction' for her piece.

A number of students have taken an interest in entering for 2022.
