Book Arts courses at the University of Maine at Machias give students a well-rounded understanding of the art and craft of the book. Our studios house traditional letterpress equipment, hand papermaking facilities, and new technologies of book production. Our graduates have gone on to careers as teachers, book artists, publishers, and graduate school candidates in Book Arts, Library Science, and Paper Conservation. In addition to making their books, UMM students work with our faculty editing original manuscripts. They then design, print, and bind the books and sell them through various distributors. All of the students who work on those books are listed as part of the production team. Students have used their copies as strong portfolio components when they apply for jobs after graduation. The Creative Arts Program courses at the University of Maine at Machias integrate book arts into the visual arts and creative writing concentrations of the program. With this combination of learning possibilities, students can find a niche that is right for them.
