The M Book
At one time, the University of Maine produced “M” Books which were scrapbooks designed for students to capture their time on campus. These scrapbooks were filled with everything from photographs and newspaper clippings to handwritten memories, offering a personal record of student life and university culture in the early 1900s as shown in the example below.
This photo is from an M Book, which showcases items that students used to include in their personal collections. Featured in the photo are tickets from a freshman year banquet and a campus showcase, as well as a photo of the M Club. The M Club, with origins dating back to 1881 and formally established in 1932, is UMaine’s letterwinner organization dedicated to supporting the past, present, and future of University of Maine Athletics.
The two items shown above are from the Maine Campus, the university's student newspaper:
an article (Dec. 19, 1911) and an advertisement (Oct. 7, 1919) encouraging students to buy their M books.
We have created an online Virtual Scrapbook to memorialize the 2024-2025 school year! To add your favorites places and memories at UMaine this year, please scan the QR code or click on this link. Everyone is encouraged to contribute and explain a bit about your submission.
