Transportation has played an important role in every day life throughout history. Humans have always used walking as the most basic form of travel. Later, animals assisted in moving far distances by carrying humans and their belongings. With the development of the wheel and a device that could support weight, transportation quickly moved civilization forward. Additional inventions enabled humans to explore the land, water, and air around the globe, and beyond into space.
Margaret Chase Smith was born on December 14, 1897. Transportation had made great strides by the time she arrived in the world. Many outstanding marvels, however, were yet to come during her lifetime. This site will introduce some of them and show how they impacted Margaret's life and career.
