HCO3, a base, and CO2, an acid, work together to maintain homeostasis. HCO3 is regulated by the kidneys. A normal HCo3 level is 22 to 26 milliequivalents per liter. The kidneys will excrete H+ ions and conserve HCO3 if the blood is too acidic. If the blood is too alkalotic, the kidneys will conserve H+ ions and excrete HCO3.Â
