In June of 1955, President Dwight Eisenhower visited Skowhegan and spoke at the fair grounds.
After his speech, President Eisenhower went to Senator Smith's Neil Hill home for a steak and lobster dinner held in the backyard. Governor Edmund Muskie was in attendance, too.
George Washington or Abraham Lincoln never slept in the Senator's guest room, but growing weary during the course of his visit, President Eisenhower retired for a nap at her home. Henceforth, the guest room was named in his honor.
During the last year of Senator Smith's life, Sister Joyce Mahany from St. Joseph's College became a full-time caretaker for Margaret. She lived on the guest side of the house tending to the Senator's needs and sleeping in one of these twin beds.
