I am sitting here in the writing center listening to a fellow tutor working their way through a tutorial. My goal for this session, as I have no scheduled appointments, is to create the Bio for the writing center website. Sounds easy right? Yeah that’s what I thought as well, then I started working on it.
I first made a categorical list with bullet points and tried to list everything that makes me, well me. That as you can probably guess didn’t work at all. After that went into the trash can I tried to list my academic qualifications for you handing over your work to me to critique. Upon the completion of that couple of pages I realized that that was not going to do anyone any good as what I look like on paper is very much not me. So I am going to attempt on this try to just wing it and see what happens.
I am a writer, I love to write and the reasons for that are as numerable as the stories that I create. I came upon this discovery late in life when I decided to come back to college following a lengthy time in the “real world”, for the record, there is no real world we make it all up as we go. Just keep on plugging away at whatever moves you forward.
I write poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and a whole lot of things in between. I have had experience with analytical writing as well and understand the concepts and reasons for doing what we do in a collegiate setting. Resumes, essays, research drafts, I have done them all to varying degrees of success. The funny thing about when I write in those terms I somehow still do it creatively. This seems hard to believe if you have ever sat in front of a research paper or critical analysis and did not understand where to begin.
Trust me if you allow yourself to relax you will do fine. What you need for the blank page in front of you is already in your head, the challenge is getting it onto the page.
