Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Training
Summer 2024
This page is a temporary solution to allow employees to meet the FERPA training requirement during the summer of 2024 while we transition to a new learning management platform.
This training outlines expectations of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, better known as FERPA. It is important that faculty, staff, parents, and students understand FERPA and how it directly impacts the right to access, and the need to protect, information. This training provides a basic understanding of FERPA and its regulations, best practices for avoiding FERPA violations, and information about UMS FERPA resources.
By the end of this training, you will be able to:
Understand and describe the basic principles and parameters of FERPA
Identify allowable FERPA actions and also violations
Describe UMS’ definitions of a UMS student and know what counts as Directory Information at UMS
Identify circumstances where FERPA rights can be waived or do not apply
Describe actions to secure student information and actions to take at UMS when a breach occurs
Locate available UMS FERPA resources
