About the Project

This project began in the fall of 2022 when University of Southern Maine history student Kayla Graffam and Dr. Ashley Towle began researching men on the monument from the 16th Maine Infantry. Kayla dedicated an entire year to researching the men from the 16th Maine and then spent another semester researching the men of the 17th Maine Infantry.

In subsequent years, more students in the History Department at the University of Southern Maine have researched the lives of more men listed on the monument. Student contributors to the project include Jackie Bonnevie, Collin Bowman, Brian Bunker, Rocco Ciraulo, Cameron Land, and Lydia Pease.  

The project is directed by Dr. Ashley Towle, assistant professor of history at the University of Southern Maine.
