Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. was founded in 1974 as our fraternity's charitable arm. Since then, SAI Philanthropies, Inc. has funded numerous projects around the globe and also awards many grants and scholarships to support SAI members.
Services for Musicians with Disabilities resulted from the merging and expansion of two former SAI Philanthropies projects which served blind and low-vision musicians: the Braille and Tape Services Project, and the Bold Notes Project. Currently, this project serves visually impaired musicians within and outside of the fraternity by providing information about available resources for blind and low-vision musicians.
The Music Therapy Project began just after World War II with gifts of such items as tape recorders, record players, clinic organs, portable pianos, autoharps, and other small instruments to Veterans' hospitals. This was followed by personal work with veterans on the part of chapter members and soon the activity was expanded to include other hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and schools for handicapped children.
A triennial composition competition established in 1948 open to composers residing in North, Central and South America, with no age limit. Two major American composers are invited to judge each IAMA competition. In addition to their judging responsibilities, the composer-judges each write a work to be published in the Sigma Alpha Iota IAMA series.
Sigma Alpha Iota provides numerous scholarships and grants to members pursuing various aspects of music as well as yearly opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral members.
In 1896, Edward MacDowell, a composer, and Marian MacDowell, a pianist, bought a farm in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where they spent summers working in peaceful surroundings. Not long after falling ill, Edward conveyed to his wife that he wished to give other artists the same creative experience under which he had thrived. Established in 1919, Pan's Cottage was given by Sigma Alpha Iota. Sigma Alpha Iota contributed in 2016 to help meet expenses for utilities and upkeep, and ongoing donations helped support a major renovation in 2019.
People-to-People projects provide material assistance and encouragement to schools, music organizations and musicians in many parts of the world where small things can make a big difference.
